Show The Salt Lake Tribune Horse am! Rider Wednesday, July 11, EV3 1984 Julie and Tony Appear to be Veterans By Pattie Auer Tribune Staff Writer MURRAY In the two years Julie Kedigh, 14, has competed m horse shows she has gained national prominence. Although she has been performing for only a short time, her horse, Ibn El Talg, affectionately known as Tony, is a veteran. In fact he "practically trained" her. Tony, who was given to Julie by a friend of the family, is 24 years old and has been in the show business for a long time. "We call him Tony the pony because he doesnt know his age, said Mrs. Kedigh, Julies mother. The Kedighs leased Tony from Linda Gallegos when Julie first became interested in showing As she began to win, they wanted to buy her a younger horse. Mrs. Gallegos gave them Tony and Julie has been win ning with him ever since Julie became interested in horse shows from her older sister Suzanne. "Suzanne talked me into showing I decided to go out and see if I was good enough and to have fun, Julie said. "My first show was at the State Fair when I was 12. It was a halter class and I used my sisters horse and took second. Never Had Lessons has Even though the never had any lessons she has done remarkably well. Julie has qualified Arabian for the U.S Arabian-Hal- f Championship Horse Show that will be held in Kentucky in October. Qualifying wasn't an easy task In order to compete in the Nationals a rider must win a medal class in one of the eight qualifying shows in the state or score a certain amount of points throughout the year. At the Spanish Fork Horse Show Julie won the medal class in English Saddle Seat Equitation, age division 17 and under. The rider is judged on skill and is required to do various patterns for a judge. She has also qualified for Nationals in Half Arabian English Pleasure, an open class where the horse is judged on his performance. She needs only two more points to qualify for the Western Pleasure division. Countless Championships Tony, a full Arabian, has won countless championships throughout the years, already winning three this year. Tony won the Golden Spike English Pleasure Half Arabian Show, a competition where only the horse is judged on his ability to perform Last year Tony was second in High Point Horse for Utah. High point horse is determined by points scored in the eight qualifying shows. Points are given for each medal class. This year he is close to winning High Point again. At the State Fair in September Julie will compete in Western Pleasure and the saddle seat equitation classes where she hopes to score enough points to enable Tony to win the honor of High Point Horse. Host Squad Prevails in Cottonwood Heights Sivim Meet By Joe Baird Tribune Staff Writer SANDY The Olympic Trials or the NCAA Championships it wasnt, but with 230 swimmers from six western states on hand, the ninth annual Cottonwood Heights Invitational held here over the weekend was quite likely the biggest swim meet the state will see in 1984. The meet, held at the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center on the east bench of Sandy, lured 24 swim teams from Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Texas, California and Colorado for competition in senior, junior and age group divisions. Its the fastest swimming competition outside of the college in the state, said meet director Jim noting that several meet competitors were in fact, participants at the recent Olympic trials. With its roster of 40 swimmers, the host Cottonwood Heights squad went Ta-ket- a, into the meet as the favorite and won segoing away on the strength of its nior boys and girls divisions, the o girls division and the overall depth of the squad. Lead The Heights opened up a more than lead over the Boulder, Colo., Poseidons and North Jeffco of Arvada, Colo., on the first day of competition and were never seriously challenged the rest of the meet. Boulders close and they and North Jeffco have a lot of good swimmers, Taketa said. But we had the overall numbers and the fact that we were home gave us the edge. Conspicuous in their absence this year was Californias Mission Viejo team, which annually fields one of the largest (86 MV tankers were on hand for last years invitational) and best swim clubs in the nation and has been the prime draw at past Cottonwood They had Heights Invitationals. 13-t- 100-Poi- nt 100-poi- nt some scheduling conflicts and some internal which kept them home, Taketa lamented, adding that had Mission Viejo made it, they almost certainly wouldve been favored to win the invitational. Still, even had Mission Viejo shown up, Taketa felt his squad would have made a fight of it. We feel that with our senior boys, senior girls and 4 girls, we could have given them a run for their money, he said. 13-1- Served as Foundation Those senior boys served as the foundation for the home team over the weekend, and anchoring them Mike and were the Hayes brothers Pat and Scott Mefford, all of whom have competed for the University of Utah, swam at last winters NCAA Championships and tried to qualify for the Olympic team last month at Indianapolis. The Hayes brothers are freestyle (its similar to Donkey Kong. Originally, an arcade game, Rocn Rope casts the player as an explorer hot on the trail of the birds of fortune, taking players to a land that time forgot. The obstacle to reaching the elusive bird is an army of dinosaurs and cave men, both of which look a lot like gremlins. Game play covers three screens, each with same objective to get to the top in the shortest period of time. At first, finding the way is fun and challenging. But with only one safe route through each screen, winning is just a matter of finding the path. Rocn Rope makes good use of a novel play mechanism, specifically, shooting a rope and then climbing it. Just flinging the rope to see what it will latch onto next is exciting for first-tim- e players. However, the explorers must be perfectly placed in order for the rope to attach itself. With each new game, the explorer is returned to the original starting position. One advantage of a magazine on disc over one on paper is that a disc magazine also can be played with. Thats the idea behind Disk Magazine from Ziff Davis for the Apple home computer. Each issue contains 10 ready-to-ru- n programs and a booklet describing how to use them. Nothing is copyrighted, so users are able to design their own back-u- p discs, as well as merge the programs on the disc with their own. 13-1- e. Special to The Tribune Young anglers are invited to try their hand at landing the big one Wednesday morning at Murray Park when the city recreation department gets its annual Fish Daze under way. The contest will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the park, with the main fishing actiSn taking place along Little Cottonwood Creek between the swimming pool and the city rec office. Recreation department officials said 500 rainbow trout will be planted in the creek for the event. Awards will be given for the first fish caught, the longest fish, heaviest fish and most fish caught. There is no cost for the contest, which is for kids 12 and under, and no state fishing license is necessary dur-in- g the contest. MURRAY The premiere issue offers a variety of both activity and utility programs. Everythng on Disk runs on DOS 3.3 of Applesoft BASIC. All the software works just as well with a color monitor as it does with a display, and is set up for output Unfortunately, the booklet accompanying the first 10 programs is 55 pages long, and the programs do not use many prompts. But all in all, the idea of a magazine for computer users that can actually be used on the computer holds a lot of promise. WANT-AD- S (Saturdays) at 1 or 277-266- 2. and 2049 E. 6200 SO.
