Show A. C. U. NOTES Apple trees should be pruned every year If the apple tree is moderately pruned every year new growth and fruit spurs are continually being produced, according accord-ing ,o Dr. Leon D. Batchelor, head of the Horticultural department of the Utah Agricultural college. If years of neglect precede the pruning, the twig growth which will follow is likely to throw the tree out of bearing. There-j There-j fore if the tree is extremely dense, or j if the shape is to be changed, radically, I it is much better to distribute the prun-i prun-i ing over a number of years rather than j bring about such a change in a single year. The shape of the tree can be j materially changed or the neglected ! tree can be thinned out and considerably j remodeled and still keep the tree bearing bear-ing if this severe pruning is distributed : through a number of years, j Care of the Harness In order to keep the harness soft, i pliable and strong, use a good prepared harness oil, such as kneadsfoot, says Prof. L. R. Humphries of Farm Mechanic Me-chanic department. Do not use linseed oil or other such oils lor tins purpose a.-, ! they do no good and are often injurious, ! besides making the harness very dis-! dis-! agreeable to handle. When applying the harness oil use a cloth dampened with the oil, or a small soft brush which ; is still better. Do not use too much oil; ! just what the leather will absorb is all 1 that is needed, and if more than this is used it is only wasted. In a few hours I after oiling go over the harness with a dry cloth and xx ipe off all the surplus oil and bend and work the leather to ' make it soft and pliable. |
