As the rotary hit chewed deeper into the ground, the costs rose,, By the time the drilling tools were below 12,000 feet, it took eight hours for a trip to raise the drilling tools to replace a worn bit and then return the tool stnng to the bottom of the hole. Drilling was slowed to a foot an hour as hard rock formations were entered. Finally, a depth of 12,467 feet was reached before the crew threw in the towel. It wasnt the states deepest dry hole. Last year Pan American Exploration Co. drilled to more than three miles 16237 feet in Grand County before plugging the hole and abandoning the site.
