| Show ' - - - - -- 4W The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday September 2 1990 Former Ogdenite to teach in Thailand By Judy Magid - ' ' - Tribune Lifestyle Writer Julia Rubin goes to Bangkok Thailand in resident former When Ogden selected by September she will be one of 18 outstanding young Americans the Henry Luce Foundation to participate in an intern program aimed at increasing understanding of Asian culture and society classes in organizational behavior and "I'll be teaching English-languag- e Administration Business at College" she said Assumption marketing 'I'm excited about going and a little nervous about learning to speak Thai It's a tonal language If you use the wrong tone you've said something insulting" Ms Rubin laughed She was in Ogden and Salt Lake City recently in part for her 10th Ogden High School reunion and to help her parents Dr Raya and Abe Rubin Ogden prepare to move to Cincinnati Ohio A cum laude graduate of Harvard-Radclif- f College Cambridge Mass and a recipient of a Harvard master's degree in business administration Ms Rubin worked on the East Coast four years in product marketing She will complete her doctorate at Harvard when she returns from Thailand A prerequisite for Luce Scholars is a lack of knowlege about Asia Participants must have highest academic achievement outstanding leadership ability and a clearly defined career path Formed in 1974 by the Henry Luce Foundation the goal of the scholars' program is to enable some of America's future leaders to gain firsthand experience in Asia This is not the first time Ms Rubin has gone to a new country without speaking the language She her mother and her brother Alex "Sasha" emigrated to Israel from Russia when she was 9 Nine months later they moved to Ogden where she grew up A vivacious redhead with a ready and sympathetic smile Ms Rubin speaks fluent Russian and accentless English "I was born in Leningrad My father died when I was a baby My mother a psychiatrist worked hard to take care of us and get us out of Russia She is so brave I think she's a real heroine" Ms Rubin said fondly Both Dr Rubin and her husband Abe (who adopted Julia and Alex) accompanied their daughter to Salt Lake City for a recent interview Dr Rubin smiled at her daughter's remarks "You don't have to be brave to take your children from a place where they have no opportunities no chances for education Besides my daughter is outspoken Even when she was small she said what she thought It was necessary to leave Russia" Necessary perhaps but not easy Dr Rubin applied to leave the country and permission was denied "Less than a year later in 1968 there was a plane hijacking The people planned to go to Sweden to tell the world that Jews were not allowed to leave Russia Two were sentenced to death There was an outcry and enough pressure from the West to change those death sentences to life imprisonment In an effort to prove it was easy to get out of Russia they said we could go" Dr Rubin said She first went to Israel with her children "And then the romantic story began" Ms Rubin grinned "Mother's first cousin Sylvia Rubin lived in Ogden She and her family came to Russia and met my family Sylvia died shortly after the trip "But Sylvia's husband Abe heard our family emigrated to Israel and was kind enough to want to help He came to Israel They fell in love and got married and Dad adopted my brother and me That's why I grew up in Ogden" Ms Rubin said Being an outsider in a small town wasn't easy either "I just went to my high school reunion It was nice to see everyone I had such a good time I've almost forgotten all the little hurts I had as a child" she grinned Dr Rubin gave a small smile and admitted "I haven't forgotten They teased so Coming from Russia they called her 'Pinkie'" It didn't take Sasha now Dr Alex Rubin Peoria II or Julia Rubin long to adjust Ms Rubin was elected Utah Girls' State national senator as a junior at Ogden High School where she was a National Presidential and National Merit Scholar She was named outstanding senior 1980 As a social anthropology major ("My mother was worried about practicality I told her I'd be great at cocktail parties:) Ms Rubin gradually became interested in organizational behavior "After working for large corporations for four years I wanted to do something more for people Perhaps having been an 'outsider' myself I have an insight into the plight of minority and women workers in the corporate world" She believes that by the year 2000 minorities and women will comprise most of the work force Ms Rubin has led groups of American students to the Soviet Union for the last two years It's not scary she said it's sad le54‘ - t I I - ot:Vi - 5- '' 4 o tons There is nothing wrong with children who are slow to adjust but you need to make sure these children are given extra reassurance They need a loving but firm nudge to make it through school that first day Children who are slow to adapt may take three weeks before they start accepting their new environment and routine It's all part of children's individual nature Discuss their feelings and reassure them that it's OK to have funny feelings in their stomach and that these feelings will go away soon Some children approach life with a positive attitude others rather negative Positive children will love almost everything while negative children will be rather wary If you know your child tends to be 'f the a for your child Probably -
