| Show Farmers Seek Assistance Of Governor Farmers in Escalante Garfield have asked Gov Norm Bangerter for help in obtaining $15 million to upgrade their irrigation County system Louise Liston a Garfield County commissioner represented the farmers in a meeting Tuesday with the governor and explained the New Escalante Irrigation Co's plans to enlarge and improve the existing Wide Hollow Reservoir and build a giltation pond to prevent the reservoir from filling with mud The Wide Hollow Reservoir originally had a water storage capacity of 2400 acre feet But mud has accumulated in the reservoir basin reducing its capacity to only 1100 acre is 325851 gallons feet An acre-foCommissioner Liston said the plan is to raise the reservoir embankment by nine feet and enlarge the spillway to accommodate floods The siltation basin would be built in Wide Hollow to catch any surface runoff carrying mud toward the reservoir The enlarged reservoir would encroach on part of Petrified Forest State Park said the commissioner forcing some of the primitive campsites to be moved Larry Anderson director of the Utah Division of Water Resources said he understands the irrigation company's needs but has doubt about its ability to repay any additional debt The company was forced recently to renegotiated a loan for its pressurized irrigation system because of a cash shortage Richard Noble a consulting engineer hired by the irrigation company said plans are under way to create a water conservancy district which could raise some of the needed money through a property tax levy The rest of
