| Show SE The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday September 2 1990 Jack Goodman's Cityview Nation's gateway Ellis Island unlocked for public visits For more years than this columnist can remember a "sea voyage" aboard the Staten Island ferry produced a splendid close-u- p view of the lower Manhattan skyline a view of Bartholdi's thought-provokin- g Statue of Liberty and an intriguing although rather distant d view of the unapproachable structures on Ellis Island The strangely shaped buildings on our nation's disused gateway were vaguely reminiscent of some of the Italianate structures of Venice A discarded sunken ferryboat its pilot house and funnel still visible above the murky waters of New York's Upper Bay helped give Ellis Island a melancholy air to both innocent sightseers and knowledgeable city residents who knew this was one of the nation's largest immigration stations The island has been closed for dozens of years its buildings obviously falling into disrepair one wondered what a close-u- p view would bring — and one also marveled that such a valuable hunk of harbor real estate was not used for a park a hospital or even a prison Fortunately all good things come to those who wait Ellis Island will be open to the public at last — beginning Saturday Along with a handful of other newsmen I was permitted to e tour the island and its huge no ' :' Qz visit to Ellis Island pretty well proves the point There's a once-bus- y baggage room with travel-batJac- k tered trunks and suitcases from the land of your forefathers There's a room once more given over to row upon row of neat but scarcely corn- fortable bunks contrived of standardized pipes and canvas coverings Here are the hard wooden benches upon which your parents grandparents aunts and uncles sat while 1 - ' mid-distan- 4' vo- - if they had or possible employment elsewhere they would be ferried across the narrow channel to the railroads on the Jersey shore Such mainland immigrants flowed by slow smoky trains to inland cities where they had ontacts or to Dakota farms the Midwest's prairies Texas farm fields or such centers as Salt Lake City Denver Seattle and San Francisco The tall buildings in the drawing are of course across the river in today's lower Manhattan where 100- story towers were built through the brawn of countless immigrants plus the genius of native- - and foreign-bor- n screened once again by uniformed Immigration doctors and officers The immigration process takes shape through the use of museumstyle exhibits and by means of twin theaters where slides and films are shown Visitors can hear taped "oral histories" made in recent years by folks who passed through busy s Ellis Island elderly immigrants who remember it well Visitors will before boarding one ot the frequent boats for the short trip back to Battery Park or New Jersey decide to sit for a while on a d bench to look out ward the Statue of Liberty toward Manhattan Brooklyn and New Jersey and give some thought to their forebears Think awhile of the Irish and Italians English and Scottish Swiss and Swedish — the Moslems and Jews Catholics Lutherans Protestants the atheists and agnosd d and tics poor and wealthy for the rich were detained here too Orientals and Caucasians tiny children the bent oldsters All races all faiths In one single signal day in 1907 a tidal wave of nearly 12000 immigrants flooded through Ellis Island n Hamburg-AmericaLiners Cunard White Star North German Lloyd Cosulich American Liners — such steamers brought a flood to these United States daily And these United States dealt with them not only via salaried doctors and nurses interpreters and matrons but through volunteers who labored at Ellis land representing religious and national groups the YWCA Red Cross Salvation Army Hebrew Alliance Latter-da- y Saints Perpetual gration Funds Catholic Charities All served the newly arrived here here on a storied little island built of mud and clay dredged from New tree-shade- prestigious firms as Stanford White's McKim Mead and White The main focus of the museum is a entry tower-rimme- d Regis- try Room fully 160 feet long and re It is of course very nearly somewhat reminiscent of another recently restored structure Union Station in Washington DC But here at Ellis Island crowds did not worry about trains Instead they fearfully awaited examinations by strangers in a strange land teams of Immigration Service doctors The d medical men the newcomers' clothing if they showed signs of transmittable diseases or of crippling bodily defects Such coded uld bar them from chalk symbols immediate entry to the land of liberty The most important architectural Room is its high point of the multiwindowed lofty vaulted ceiling It is covered with carefully fitted geometrical patterned Guastavino tiles installed back in 1918 two decades after the structure opened We are a native bard once wrote "Americans all immigrants all" A dark-skinne- chalk-marke- children were among the thoughtful grandchildren of immigrants who contributed $100 or more toward the 8156 million restoration of the immense old building Now its walls bear the names of 200000 immigrants whose descendants contributed their mite to this the largest and most expensive restoration project in the nation's history And perhaps the most significant project The museum's Registry Room in the 200000 names are placed (there's ample room for many more) as well as the entire National Park Service project had its inception with the 1986 rehabilitation of the Statue of Liberty under the leadership of Lee Iacocca Now excursion boats plying to Bedloe's Island upon which Liberty Enlightening the World so proudly stands leave the with Battery Park wharf boats to Ellis Island Features in The Tribune Travel section along with articles in a dozen or so magazines will give full details on sightseeing that can't be squeezed into this column: Suffice it to say if standing at the position of today's sketch the Statue of Liberty would be off to the left beyond the Immigration Museum's invisible but existd tower But I ing matching had space enough for the rather curiously gabled building at the right of the New Jersey mainland — near Communipaw Hoboken and Jersey which light-skinne- ' ' 41 -
