Show fa, I The Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, March I7 fTTFp' 5, 1978 Caputo Store Mi 5 Spend $5 on Candy "What's amazing to me," says Hazel, is the amount of money kids today have to spend on candy. She says she can remember when five cents was a great deal of money for a kid coming into the store. And the kid thought long and hard about the selection of his candy to make sure he got the most out of that five cents. "Now a kid will come in here, spend $3 on candy, and think nothing of it she said. a V'S 4y. ' Era ' of Neighborhood Grocery Fnkrc SJL O JL the small neighborhood groceries began to die off. Neighborhood Moved And in the Caputo neighborhood, where many railroad employees lived and owned their own homes, and where everybody seemed to know everybody else, tlie homes started going up for sale, one by one. People could afford new homes in other parts of the growing valley, or their children would grow up and leave home, so the parents would move into apartments. Most of the homes around here are rented now, said Rose. The neighborhood doesnt have the same kind of spirit that it once did. Ross and Cristina Caputo purchased the store in 1922, nine years after they had immigrated to the United States from Italy. Before taking over the store, Mr. Caputo was a worker in the Bingham mines. To buy the store and become a retailer, he sold the home he had purchased earlier with $800 In $20 gold pieces. In those days, the Caputo children remember, small neighborhood grocery stores were common. There were six such stores in that west-sid- e neighborhood, and for a time they all did quite well. But as transportation became more mechanized and it became easier for people to travel, and as the chain store concept became accepted by society, Continued From Page F-- l the biggest part of our business now, savs Hazed. And the kids after school are a major part of the clientele. They come in to buy that penny candy. "3 only two original settlers left in the neighborhood. "Then the I.DS Ward moved out, leaving us as the only holdout," said Hazel. There have been some stormy times in the of the Caputo Grocery Store, although Mr. Caputo was never in danger of losing the store. He was financially secure in that regard, because the store was paid for and he and his wife generally were the only employees of the store, and the only payments he had to worry about were taxes. Werent a Burden The kids werent a burden financially either. They learned young that they had to work for what they got and Rose said it got to the point where the Caputos and the LDS Ward w ere the the picketers turned off the water and was promptly belted in the head with the nozzle by the mother of 11 children. Active in Athletics their own odd jobs, from selling newspapers to delivering ice. But the children remember in the 1930s when a Sunday closing law was established in Utah. Caputos remained open on Sunday, but sold only candy and soda water, which was bgal. They covered the groceries that day to remain within the law. But the unions in the bigger stores didnt appreciate Caputos remaining open on Sundays. "We were picketed for a long time, remembers Jay, the oldest son who stops by every day to look in on his mother, visit his sisters and have a beer and salami sandwich. One day, Mrs. Caputo attempted to turn a hose on the picketers when they to storm the store. One of all of them had When they were growing up in the small apartment above the store, the eating bread remember children soaked in coffee and milk from a large bowl kept in the bathtub. Many of the Caputo children became active in athletics. Jay has run athletic programs in the Catholic Youth Organization for years. John, a teacher at West High School, played football for Utah State University, and he maintains Murrays Ken Price Baseball Park during the summer months. Nick, the only one of the 11 cliildren now deceased, was the first football coach at Highland High School.
