Show BONANZA PROJECT ptf0 H?, Hi edlDeoflSoirj) For MSnue Dedication ceremonies are planned September 17 and 18 to mark completion of construction, and herald operation of all phases of the Bonanza Power Plant Project. Two separate dedication rites, along with open house and tours, will be conducted to feature the two major division of the project. The first of the two observances will be nidi Power Pflsunifl held Tuesday, September 17, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Deserado Mine, northeast of Rangely, Colorado. Hosted by Western Fuels-Utathe day will allow local, state and national civic and business representatives, as well as the general public an opportunity to attend the rites, and tour surface facilities at the mine, as well as conveyor and rail systems. Open house and tours will follow dedication ceremonies. The second day of ceremonies will be held at the Bonanza Power Plant southeast of Vernal Wednesday, September 18. The rites will commemorate completion of the plant, as well as the water system and transmission grid. Deseret Generation & Transmission will host activities on the 18th. Open House and tours will begin at 9 a.m., and continue until 7 p.m., with time out for dedication rites from 2 to 3 p.m. A complete schedule of events, and an outline of dedication ceremonies may be found on page eight of this publication. Harry Fieldsted, president of Deserets Board of Trustees, and Stan Bazant president of Western Fuels, along with management of both companies extend an invitation to residents of the area to participate in either or both of the observances. "We are proud of the project, and hope our friends and neighbors take advantage of the opportunities to see what has been accomplished, Mr. Fieldsted stated. Visitors at the mine Tuesday, September 17, will have an opportunity to walk through surface facilities, see conveyor systems, coal storage, cleaning facilities, computer control system, maintenance and administrative facilities. No public tours will be conducted in underground workings, but mine portals will be seen. Mine visitors will also be shown the overland conveyor system which will carry coal from the mine to a rail loading facility about four miles to the north. Rail loading ana maintenance facilities will be features of the tour, including the actual loading of rail cars throughout the afternoon. At the power plant Wednesday, September 18, visitors will be allowed to tour of the plant, complete a at their leisure. The tour route will be outlined, but visitors will be able to spend what time they want in viewing various features of the generating facilities. In addition to the walking tour, a riding tour throughout the 2200 acre site will be provided, where visitors will see coal self-guide- d surface facilities near Rangely, Colorado. DESERADO MINE loading facilities (with cars being unloaded at various times throughout the day), coal storage, water storage area, water plant, cooling towers, and environmental features such as baghouse and scrubber. The site tour will last about 20 minutes, with starting times about every 10 minutes. Dedication rites at the power plant will be held beginning at 2 p.m. on the turbine genera tor floor. Adequate space is available there for all visitors, and seating and sound system will be provided for comfort. Dedication of the project culminates four years of construction activity, in addition to several years of advance planning, including permitting THE BONANZA POWER PLANT, now a dominant feature of Kennedy Wash southeast of Vernal, is in final countdown for dedication and operation. Following dedication September 8, operation and testing of the plant will be conducted, with commercial operation scheduled for January , 986. 1 1 1 and financing. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held in August, 1981, for both the mine and the plant. The mine has been producing coal for more than two years, with the first shipment of coal to the power plant in January 1984. No power has been generated at the power plant, although most systems have been ready for use since January of this year. Final construction of power transmission lines was completed in August this year, paving the way for generation to begin. First power will be generated about the first week in October. Testing will continue through the balance of the year, with the plant placed in commercial operation by January 1, 1986. |
