Show fl cJ V g ftj S 6 f Vernal ExpfeSS September 11, 1985 Wednesdoy, 23 Softball crew wins nationals team was the number one team out of Villanova won the NCAA basketball crown Brigham Young University was the national college football champ for 1984 Dixie College was the national junior college basketball title winner The city of Vernal has its own national champions as Utah Micro Graphics, with three Vernal players, won the United States Slowpitch Soft-baAssociation D division Western Divisional National Championship over the Labor Day Weekend at Sunnyvale, California in the Twin Creeks Sports Complex Arizona The Mill Creek, California crew as ranked as the number seven soft ball team in the country by the USSSA, but the Utah team knocked off the Mill Creek bunch, 7 4 The Utah crew also knocked off another nationally ranked team Moon Crickets of Northern California 15 5 w ll A battle of undefeated teams from Utah took place in the next game and c the Utah team edged the Utah Angels from Orem and Provo 10 9 in 12 innings Micro-Graphi- Vernal members of the team are Gary Monsen, Kim Peterson and Craig Monsen Paysons Jeff Alexander, who is originally from Roosevelt and Duchesnes Rick Browning are also members of the team Other Utah Micro Graphic players are Alan McDonald, Heber and Dennis City, Doug Fox, American Fork, Steve Fitzgerald, Lehi, Gary Lundell, Provo, Howard Cooper and Gary Gray, American Fork Browning and Doug Fox were named valuable players All star members were Craig and Gary Monsen, McDonald and Dennis Fox The lead was back and forth all the way The Utah Angels grabbed a one run lead in the top of the seventh, but the Utah Micro Graphic team tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh Both teams were held scoreless in the eighth, ninth, tenth and 11th, but Utah Micro Graphic scored one run in the 12th for a one run win Fitzgerald hit a sacrifice fly and Doug Fox scored the winning run from third base st No Sweat of Los Angeles, California, forced the championship into a second title game when they downed Utah Micro Giaphic, 13 7, in the first championship game However, the Utah Micro Graphic team came back in the second championship game and won the title when they pounded No Sweat, 14 4 The game was close until the fourth inning when the Utah team turned in a big inning c Utah beat By Me, California state champion, 4 3 in the first round The Utah team had a 4 0 lead going into the last inning and By Me scored three runs to lose by one Micro-Graphi- run A 16 5 win was gained by the Utah team over Charlie Taylor Ceremamc of Arizona in the second round VERNAL SOFTBALL players, Kim Peterson, Craig Monsen and Gary Monsen, left to right, display plaques and trophies won by first place team Utah Slowpitch Softball Association Micro-Graphi- c D at the United States Western Divisional National Tournament over the Labor Day Weekend The team consists of players from Vernal, Duchesne, Roosevelt, American Fork, Heber, Provo and other Utah cities Softball teams competed in 285 games, August 31, September 1 and 2 Home runs weren't allowed in the tournament and any hit were outs The only okay homers were the inside the park type Most of the parks had outfield fences 300 or more feet away from home plate The Utah Micro Graphic team rallied in the bottom of the seenth inning and scored the winning run with two outs in a 11 10 third round triumph over Arrington Chevron, district champion from Fairfield, California TEN PIN JUNIORS LADIES TWILIGHT LEAGUE w as know n as Utah the Orem As when they won the Vernal Memorial Day Tournament The Utah team took part in 16 tournaments They placed first at Green River, Heber City, Vernal American Fork and the Na Micro-Graphi- Arrington Chevron jumped out to a 10 1 lead, but their lead dropped to three runs at 10-- going into the bottom of the seventh inning The Utah team scored four runs for a one run win Doug Fox ripped a shot up the middle to drive in the w inning run 7 Wen-dove- r, tionals They also placed second three times and their lowest finish was fifth place A 15 3 win was gained by the Utah team in the fourth round in a game with Taski of Phoenix The Taski FRIDAY FUNTIMERS Spidle Sales 5 Frontier Travel 1 Zanes 3 Oilfield High Series Debbie McKeachnie Bolena Aguilar Jerile Southam 575 525 500 High Games Maria Trujillo Debbie McKeachnie Jerile Southam 227 216 187 DINAH CLASSIC Chevron Best 3 Triangle Parts 6 teams tied for second FRI 16 1st place - four way tie High Games DeAnn Boren Alex Steenbergen Austin Steel High Series High Series Bettye Guffey Vince Moracz Gary Simper 682 594 588 High Alex Steenbergen Lois Harris SKI SALE CONTINUES!
