Show 4C Wednesday, October 13, 1982 Sun Advocate Davis gives up cleaver banker turns butcher became By SCOTT LLOYD Staff Writer Nolan Davis HELPER retired this week and turned his meat cleaver over to former protege Michael S. Milovich, a banker turned butcher. Davis, 65, has owned Nolans A G Food Store, 5 N. Main, since 1951, when he started a butcher shop in the rear of what used to be a laundry operated by Mrs. Lynn Broadbent. Since then, he has seen it grow into a thriving grocery business, locally famous for its quality cuts of meat and unique sausage recipe. Nolan Davis, left, former owner of Nolan's Market, cuts his farewell slab of meat as he turns the reigns owner, Michael of S. the business over to new Milovich. Davis plans to help the new owner frequently and Milovich will continue the store's famous sausage recipe. Photos by Rick Egan Davis said the sausage will continue to be offered under the ownership of Milovich who learned the meat cutting trade during the 10 years he worked for Davis. The store will be known as Helper Food Town. Milovich, 32, eventually a successful vice president at the Price branch of First Interstate Bank. But he said he became tired of the pressures. I told Nolan when he was ready to sell the store, I wanted the first shot, and thats what transpired, he said. Milovich, a former Helper City Councilman who lost an election bid for mayor to Robert E. Olsen last year, admitted it is pretty spooky to make such a drastic career change. But Im glad I did it, he added. He said the grocery business is not necessarily easier than the banking business, adding that he worked until late one night and began early the next morning. But Davis said he will continue to help out in the butcher shop. Davis learned the meat business while working at the old O.P. Skaggs store for former Helper Mayor Barney Hyde and his wife. Hyde sent him to two schools Zions Bank tops the money market funds r operated by the chain in Salt Lake City. From there, he went to the Food Center, where he worked with Chris Jouflas, Leonard Lange and Tom Beveridge, prior to entering the U.S. Marine Corp in 1943. Following his military service in the South Pacific, he returned to Helper and went to work at the old East Side Market, formerly located on Janet Street. In 1951, he and his wife Larue, acquired the store where they built the business. Davis said Milovich is not the only one of his former young employees who has made good. He said Jeff Keller, who now works at Smiths Food King, used to work for him. Another former employee is Junior Albo, who is now a doctor at Holy Cross Hospital. In addition to helping Milovich in the shop occasionally, Davis plans to spend his time doing carpentry work and volunteer work for his church. .
