In addition, the council introduced the first street numbering system in the community, as well as the street lighting, which lit the first spark of community pride. Since the early 1940s the council has brought about many positive changes in Magna. Through its efforts. the Magna Water and Sewer Improvement District and the Magna Mosquito Abatement District came into being and members raised $130,000 to build a swimming pool at Cyprus high school. The council purchased the old Mori Restaurant and subsequent improvements to the building have been made through the Community Development funds that were applied for by the council. Most people are unaware of the fact that the building owned by Granite School District at 3041 So. 8560 West has been operated by the Magna Community Council since 1973. The council gave up the lease agreement in June, 1986 and turned it over to the Community Action Program because it could not afford liability insurance. However, the council has continued to pay half of all the utilities it takes to keep the building open. Until last June, the money provided by Kennecott made it possible for the council to offer a variety of services for health, housing, food, employment and utility help to low income people. Until March, 1986 when the nursing division of the public health department chose to terminate an agreement with the council, the community was able to offer blood pressure clinics, immunizations, well baby services an child health conferences once a week. Now, after a lengthy battle with the health department, the town only has immunizations and child care once a month at Cyprus high. The blood pressure clinic was moved to Kearns. Twice a year there are cancer screening clinics sponsored by the Utah Department of Health and the American Cancer Society held in the council building. In addition, members of Alcoholics Anonymous meet there once a week. The Oquirrh Community Fund, a branch of the United Way, uses the building once a month and during election times the center serves as a polling place. Since the withdrawal of the health department from the building, the Magna Community Council now has an office there and uses the building extensively for planning and zoning meetings, as well as interviews with developers who are seeking zoning changes. Other positive steps taken by the council include vigorous participation in a move to prevent a garbage dump from being located on the watershed in the Oquirrh Mountains and a feed mill on the southwest end of tow n. Buscende Since 1980 the council has also taken a firm stand against a fiberglass fabrication plant being located in the extreme west qnd of town near Webster school; succeeded in zoning an industrial complex to M-on 2100 South from M-prevented a fertilizer plant from locating in the area; came out against more low income housing here; explored the possiblity of incorporation to have more local control; succeeded in getting the state and county to vacate the curve and widen the intersection at 2700 South and 8400 West; lowered the speed limit on 8400 West between 2700 and 4100 South and is currently working on acquiring a free standing library that will serve all of the people. 2 i With Physician Finder, you can get information on hundreds of doctors from LDS, Cottonwood, Alta View, and Wasatch Canyons hospitals with one quick phone call.
