Show Thursday, June THE GREEN SHEET 5 Letters Proud Officer To the editor, I am a police officer for the West Valley City Police Department. Despite recent negative publicity, am still proud of the work that I do and the department that I work for. Approximately eight months ago, four of my colleagues were disciplined by our department for conduct that was deemed inappropriate. When the situation originally came to the attention of the department, an investigation was conducted and all four officers cooperated and told the truth. They were subsequently suspended without pay for periods of time ranging from 10 to 30 days. They also lost their merit raises I were subsequently (which reinstated), a promition and they and their families have had to deal with the whole situation being repeatedly brought up in the media. In adiditon, at the time of the in itial investigation, the office of Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) with the Utah Department of Public Safety looked into the matter to determine whether they should be decertified as police officers. P.O.S.T. decided at that time to take no action. There are many people who have expressed both agreement and disagreement with the punishment that the officers received. Opinion on that punishment seems to have run the gamut, from too severe, to just right, to not severe enough. Not everyone is happy with the way things worked out. Nevertheless, whether any of us agree or disagree with what happened, the matter was looked into by competent bodies and they were punished Now a citizens group has initiated action that they hope will result in the firing and prosecution of the officers. They apparently did not agree with how things happened the Emission Testing Van Request Put On Hold SALT LAKE. The County Planning Commission here Tuesday put on hold a conditional use request from Independent Emission testing to set up one of its mobile testing vans at 3650 W. 5400 South. Commissioners said they considered the request one that would fit under the new mobile store ordinance, which is currently being drawn up by the commission staff. They decided to wait to consider the request by Independent Emission . e, f Muzzleloaders Continued from page 1 In the 1830s, everyone wanted a felt hat, Nudd said. And when the demand for felt hats stopped, the mountain man era was over. n The rendezvous, which is French for betake yourselves, was started during this era of beaver pelt trading, Nudd said. The trading companies would arrange yearly meeting places so they could resupply their agents. The mountain men gathered there to get resupplied, to get drunk and to find themselves a young lady, Nudd said. The local Indian tribes were more than willing to supply the young ladies because they wanted one of them to marry one of these mountain men. It was a feather in the cap of the young ladys father. But even Nudd will admit there was more to the mountain man era than beaver pelt swapping and drunken brawls. The white settlers who entered the North American frontier had to forsake their European customs. Then they assumed the lifestyle of the people who were living comfortably in that environment - the Native Americans, Nudd said. Most mountain men came west with a suit, street shoes and a bunch of fancy luggage, Nudd said. But that stuff woie out in the first year. To replace the shoes the mountain man went to the local shoemaker; a squaw that knew how to make moccasins. And when he needed a new suit he also went to the local taylor, which was himself. He shot a deer tanned the hide and made himself a pair of pants and shirt. "That's the kind of clothes they made because thats what lasted, Nudd said. "The fancy suit was nice, but it didnt last long. Nudd also said contrary to popular belief, the mountain man was a well-know- d clean-shave- Taylor, chairman of the Community and Salt Lake County Council, Public Works Director John Hiskey expressed pro and con viewpoints on n Taylorsville-Benmo- the proposed incorporation Taylorsville-Benmo- of at the meeting n The State Legislature has sent the message that the county is unintended to provide municipal services ... and I believe that it (the county) has served its purpose, Taylor said. West Valley City w ho C-- Cons Debated At Chamber Meeting n Continued from page Councilman Leland DeLange also admitted to being surprised when Arnold Development pulled its petition. I thought they would have the city make the deicison, then go from there, he said DeLange said he still favors not putting high density residential development in the area "Im not even sure its a good area for any' residents, he said But if residential development' does occur m the overpressure zone,' DeLange favors larger homes with more spacing It's hard to develop that side of There is no water town, he said and it doesn't have the prestige But residential development in the zone will take some foresight, he It will take someone that said doesnt want to make a million dollars every time he puts a hammer down " In regard to incorporating the Long study recommendation that a golf course be built in the zone, DeLange said he feels it is nearly impossible because of the low water table DeLange said some suggestions by Hercules have intrigued him first time and are now bringing the issue up again. Their action is something that they as citizens have a right to do. P.O.S.T. has also decided that they did not like the way things were handled the first time and have decided to take another look at decertifying the officers. Ironically, the officers cooperation in the first investigation may now work against them in this subsequent action. I am in no way trying to condone what they may or may not have done. I will keep my opinion on that matter to myself What I do take issue with is the way in which they are being punished over and over again for the same thing Whether or not the citizens group or POST prevails, the officers and their families are again having to worry about something that they were led to believe would end with their punishment. In all fairness, like it or not, it should have been laid to rest then It is only just that when any of us do something wrong and are d punished for it, that we not be GREEN SHEET CLASSIFIED homes every Thursday morning, covering a lot of territory. ADS reach mid-valle- said with current revenues the county projects a shortfall in the service budget, acmunicipal-typ- e cording to Taylor. And the county knows the people dont want a property tax increase, he said. Taylor said in the first incorporation election the attitude of the people was "just leave use alone; we dont want to be bothered But it seems that support is strong this time around - 95 percent sounds like a good figure, he said. Taylor said there is some controversy concerning the proposed western boundary for Taylorsville-Bennion- . Citizens living east of 4015 West asked the Taylorsville-BenmoCommunity Council to represent them, but the Kearns Town Council felt it should have that responsiblity "We took an objective poll and an overwhelming majority of citizens want to be part of Taylorsville-Bennion- , said Taylor. Since becoming involved in community government, Taylor said he has seen a need for government to be closer to the people. "Cities have more political clout, he said. The county has got a lot to worry about and I fear that has made them more remote. When attempting incorporation two years ago, Taylor said the projected high tax increase and the leave us alone" attitude killed the effort. But Taylor said the "leave us alone attitude cannot be condoned any longer. We dont live in a vacuum, he said. The population in the Salt Lake Valley is going to increase by 30 percent in the next 13 years. Things aren't going to stay the same. Hiskey said the county is especially concerned with how taxes will be n y (UeGflitalble Incorporation Pros, man. More than often he was a school teacher from the East looking for some adventure. His standard stock in literature were the w'orks of Shakespeare and the Bible. Mountain men were because if they had a heavy beard, the Indians thought they were half bear, half man. Even though the muzzleloader was a popular weapon of the time, it was seldom used, according to Muzzleloader club Bushway Norm Christensen. (Bushway is French for president. ) Mountain men allotted themselves about 40 balls per year, Christensen said. They used the gun in case of emergency and to get meat. But they were more adept at using tomahawks. They always carried their gun empty, then they loaded it according to what they were going to shoot, Christensen said. Although these modern day mountain men may have the conveniences of the 20th century closer at hand, they still reveal in the spirit of the era. Nudd said members of the group find joy in the natural things of life. They also learn a great repsect for the outdoors, he said. Learning about the mountain man way of life teaches you how to care for yourself without modern conveniences, Nudd said. There is a lot to be said for getting away from the fast life, he said. The Muzzleloader club was organized nearly six years ago by Christensen. By trying to keep the group small, he said it remains more family-orienteand everyone knows each other.
