I feel very strongly that we need a better balance in the legislature so a discussion can be held to talk about education, labor, business development, etc. As the legislators now meet in closed caucus sessions, the needs and issues are not taken care of because of lopsided politics. I am retired and healthy, and with the experience that I have had as a of a construction worker, part-ownsuccessful business, served in state government, boards and in advisory positions in the state and church. I will work for you, the people. Your vote wont be wasted if you vote for me in the primary, Aug. 21st and the general election. er Mable Atkinson Democrat Age 67, 3772 American Dr., retired educator. There are many issues that will need the attention of the Utah legislators during the next session. I believe one of the major issues is Kathrine Brimley We Republican provide line back into our schools. It can be done. We as citizens expect the school districts of the state of Utah to continue curriculum reform and cut those courses that do not give the student the basic and necessary education they need to continue their education in the halls of higher learning or technical training centers. We as citizens expect the school districts to continue fiscal reform and make sure the moves expended are for the benefit of the students and not for special unrelated projects. Now is the time for more efficiency. Our financial future is in danger. Unemployment and high costs are crippling our buying power. To enlarge the job market and broaden the tax base, Utah government needs to stimulate economics growth and development by attracting new business and diversity of industry to our state. We need not increase our taxes. Have you noticed that our property and state income taxes are getting higher? These higher taxes not only create financial risks for all of those us, but also jeopardizes citizens who are on fixed incomes and in danger of losing their homes. Now is the time for the taxpayers who pay the bills to get a better deal from our state government. Drunk drivers still hurt and kill people. We still have to work harder to keep the drinking driver off Utahs roads. Other vital issues existing in our community that need our attention include child abuse, illegal drug flight in Utah, the overcrowding and lack of proper facilities at the State Prison, and water resources. I have the experience of community service. I understand the concerns and views of the majority of the citizens in the community I will listen to the concerns of the citizens. I can give the leadership needed for this district. I have served eight years as a city councilman, eight years as Society, junior and elementary P.T.A. programs, scouting programs, State Tax Commission, director of the Division of Registration and many other church and civic leadership posi- tions. I share in the concerns of unemployment, quality education, flooding, protecting the fixed incomes of the elderly, and sharing in ongoing programs for the handicapped or disabled I feel Legislative District 52s biggest problem is the KCC workers without jobs. My friends and neighbors, many with 20 plus years at KCC, now face unemployment lines and possibly welfare rolls. Every effort must be made to bring wage-producin- g industries Brent H. I believe there is one enormous, critical issue in the minds of people who live in Legislative District 53, and that issue is getting help for Kennecott people and others who are unemployed. It is estimated that after one full year in operation, there will be at least 30 fewer peracsons killed in alcohol-relate- d cidents. After getting the laws passed through the legislature, my biggest and one of the most important efforts was to get a money bill through to finance the enforcement. We were finally successful in getting $4.5 million of new money to go to cities and counties to enforce the DUI laws. All of this money came from the alcohol industry. There is another bill that I feel is very important for the total DUI program. That is a report by the judges of Utah to the people. It needs to pass and that is one of the main reasons I need your help in this election. District.53 Ronnie R. Paine Road, employee, Ivan Woodbury Landscaping. Its obvious that one of the big issues this year is education. We spend more of our income for education than any other state. Im a former Kennecott employee and several members of my family are Kennecott people. So I feel their pain and I know their needs. I believe a single, persistent legislator - one who is not afraid to speak out, who will confront power brokers to get things done, who believes in the cause of people in District 53 - can make big things happen for our district. I believe I am the person to take on the crusade for jobs, job retraining and bringing new industry to our community. It can be done. The office of constable in any given town or precinct is one of great importance and should be given the same consideration as the mayor, city council, and other elected city officials. Oftentimes the voting public does not understand the office of constable and its function, let alone the person running for office. Traditionally, it is not an office thats paid a lot of attention during an election. The function of a constable varies greatly. For the most part, a constable is responsible for the service of civil and criminal process out of the courts in hisher precinct. Payment for this office is on a fee basis, paid by the defendant or wrongdoer, not by the taxpayer. I am certified with Utah penel officer standards and training as a category II peace officer (a requirement for constables and their deputies). I served as a reserve police officer for West Valley Police Department two years and for the past Vh years Have served as chief deputy for the West Valley constables office. I feel that years I have worked in law enforcment in West Valley has put me in touch with many of the problems and benefits that West Valley City residents have. I feel that constables have not and currently are not being used to their fullest potential. It will be my goal to maximize the use of the constable in West Valley City. -- faces many complex challenges that need effective solutions. I have the desire to serve. A person that has worked for KCC for 20 plus years must have skills that would be valuable to another industry, however, it appears that the workers must move elsewhere to find work.
