Show o T 4 Thursday, August THE GREEN SHEET 16, 1984 Bravery Comes In Many Guises 0 0 0 Bravery shows itself forms, but Im convinced that the one who moves out and bravely does what needs to be done got hisher start back in early youth. I saw such a display last weekend. It pleased me deeply as I watched it happen and brought tears to my eyes when I told of the event later on. It happened at a local park where a curve in the stream has been widened to create a beach where youngsters can play. The further side of the creek is deeper, but still shallow, say about 2xk feet at the most. Its swifter there and willow branches hang low, giving young lads a place to practice their own Tarzan act. It isnt dangerous and was purBut posely made for youngsters. watlast weekend I sat there and ched my two youngest grandchildren, Eric and Rachael, play in the 2 to 5 inch water while keeping my third eye on Michael as he crossed over and swung on the willows. Voters May Be Few, Far Between By degrees he talked her into taking a short roundabout way to get back to the water and then he stepped in and little by little coaxed her into the moving water. It came up to her waist and the rocky bottom and swift water made her unsteady. She was almost paralyzed in fear. of simply turning and getting back to the slow, shallow water. in many I watched her clamor over the rocks, up the bank on that side and glanced about, expecting some mother or father to go to her rescue. And I dont down-pla- y that word rescue either, because at her age and size, she was in trouble, terrified, and needed help. Until now. With Michele spending much of her nights rehearsing for the Annie play in Murray park, I drew the assignment of covering some of her evening meetings. In particular, I have covered the last two Granite School Board meetings for her. It was during these meetings that I realized Shakespeare must have had a great understanding of school boards. Who knows, maybe he even started his writing career covering the local school board meetings for Ye Olde Greene Sheete. Theres hope for me. In any event, after what transpired at the last two Granite board meetings, I can be silent no longer. At the July 17 meeting, the board received a recommendation for realigning the three areas in the district. Oh, you didnt know you were assigned to a certain area in the district? Well, you were, so now you can sleep at night. Or at least you could. It appears that at this meeting the boundaries of the three areas were changed. Not exactly earth-shatterin- g news for students or even their parents, since the area differentiation is mainly designed to make the administrative tasks of the district run smoothly. Under the superintendent, there are five assistant supers, and three of them each have an area they are responsible for. So far no problems. And good thing too. With the start of school just around the corner, the district needed to settle the area boundary realignment and get on to other important matters, not the least of which is the GEA teacher negotiations. So they approved the boundary changes. But then, at that July 17 meeting, all reason flew out the window, and could the Bard have seen what was about to take place, he would have done a flip in his grave the likes of which would have made even Mary Lou Retton jealous. The three areas had names denoting their location - the East Valley Area, the Central Valley Area and the West Valley Area. Appropriate names, since one was on -- the east side, one on the west and one smack dab in the middle. Heres the problem. When the realignment was approved, there remained an area on the west, but the other two were realigned so that they were located north and south of each other, not east and west as before. What to do? You and I would naively suggest they rename the two areas north and south, and what the staff recomWest Area, North Area mended and South Area. thats exactly - Whereupon board member Joyce Higashi, who represents a precinct up on the east bench, told the board that she wasnt so 6ure the former easterners in her precinct would like being called southerners or northerners. It might be offensive. For the next hour - thats 60 precious minutes - the board debated this obviously crucial of what to name the areas. Finally, exhausted, the group decided to delay the naming to the next board meeting and just approve the boundaries without names. This was ap- students knew or cared what area theyre assigned to; that the area designations are used only by the administrators. He then suggested they call them Area One, Area Two and Area Three. This proposal passed, with only one board member opposing it. Want to lay odds on who that was? Swensen made a good point about the area names. Who cares? I defy you to show me a student that gives a hoot which area hes in. Never have I heard a student bragging to a friend: Hey, we beat an Area 3 team last night. And nobody else cares, either. How many realtors, when showing a home to a family, would caution them, You wouldnt like it here, its in Area One. Let me show you a lovely Area Two home. Please dont misconstrue the intent of this column. I think the Granite School Board has been doing a wonderful job. It is the largest district in the state and the board has some awesome responsibilities - which it has handled superbly. All the more reason for the board to avoid situations like this naming of areas. Lets dispense with these trivial matters quickly and move on to more important issues. Like settling with the teachers oh their con-- tracts. If certain board members put as much time into the teacher negotia- tions as they do into giving meaningless names to equally meaningless boundaries, that problem might be settled. Cmon, board members. Youre elected officials, try not to act like it. laughingly realized that dramatics were aimed right for those little darlings. They reacted in the right manner, too.
