Show Dickens Festival WEST VALLEY VIEW Thursday, Dec. 8, 1983 Elaine Hansen Participates by Helen Glissmeyer Among those participating at the Dickens Festival at the Old Mill clubhouse this year is Elaine Hansen of Holladay. The festival is being held each weekend from now until Dec. 10th and the seasonal wares being offered have been created by local people who will be dressed in Victorian costume. This is the second season that Elaine and her friend Chris Lillie have participated. They have spent countless hours making ceramic apples, pitchers, ducks, pigs and baskets, plus a variety of wreaths to sell at the event. Mrs. Hansen creates items throughout the entire year, but is especially busy at Christmas time. Last year she made quilted and embroidered wall hangings and tree ornaments for the Dickens gala. She decorates a tree for the Festival of Trees each year and last year patterned her own fabric angels to hang from the branches. One of her most recent pastimes has been hand stenciling, with which she has decorated walls, draperies and floor coverings in her new home. She finds that fabric handiwork complements all types of furnishings from contemporary found in her living room, to the antique decor in her bedroom. She prides herself in introducing crafts that are new to our area. She traveled to New York to learn how to do net darning, a needlework that is popular in the southern states. It is done by weaving a fine yarn back and forth on net similar to that used in needlepoint, but much softer. A Christmas tree, entirely of net darning lace, will have its own spot on her walls this holiday season. Trapunto is another art which is relatively new to most needle-crafterTo do this Mrs. Hansen stitches around a design through two layers of fabric, then slits the back layer to fill it with batting, making the motif puff out. The two dimensional work can be framed or mounted in a hoop with a ruffle to finish it.- Although Elaine is a math major and has taught elementary school, she would rather be wallpapering her walls or working with needle and thread. She and her husband, Frank, have established a Christmas tradition of having each child choose a new ornament to add to their tree every December. These trinkets help daughters, Kimberly and Laurel, and sons, hand-crafte- The 'Cousins' Christmas Band,' who perform each holiday season for all the members of their close family are from left, seated, Lorry Sanderson, Karie Frost and Laury Sanderson. The Sanders Family Of West Valley Area- - From a Passing Fancy In 1979 Yearly Family Tradition Evolves by OlgaMilius A joyous Christmas tradition is continuing in several families as the Cousins Christmas Band resume their annual activities. The band began several years ago when the older children of Lyn and Elke Sanders complained that Christmas wasnt any fun because they had no money to buy presents. Asked who they particularly wanted to buy gifts for, they replied, grandma and grandpa. The parents then suggested that, as the grandparents always enjoyed hearing the youngsters play their instruments, they could work up a selection of Christmas music as a surprise. The boys did so, and the project was such a success that the following year several cousins wanted to join in the gift. Now all the kids in the family want instruments so they can be part of the band at Christmas time, said Elke. Involved this year are David, Mark and Scott Sanders, ages 15. 13 9:00 A.M. Karie, who is in her first year with the band, will also play piano this year, but will be on flute next Christmas. David plays trumpet, Mark, clarinet; Travis the saxophone, and Jeanine the flute. The Sanders boys are the children of Lyn and Elke, Daniel and Karin Frost are parents of Travis and Kane, Jeanine is the daughter of Lynn and Elaine Brighton and the twins are children of Russ and Linqe Sanderson. The cousins have received requests to play at senior citizen centers, reunions, ward parties and school events. "We have to limit the number of performances because they are all m school, and have to practice for school concerts and programs as well as keep on top of their studies, said Elke. But they love to perform their Christmas music. And, although they have been offered money, they refuse saying they feel good to give their music for Christmas. Music teacher A. C. Cook gives his time to help them practice and make arrangements of music for them, she said. "The whole family schedules holiday activities around the kids band. We mothers have to finish our shopping and preparations early so we are free to take them around, she laughed But the Cousins Christmas Bands favorite audience is still their many grandparents, their original cheering section, she noted. Their other favorites are residents of the Golden Living Center, where they love to play their Christmas music and share their holiday spirit with the senior citizens. d s.
