Opening round losses by two of Taylorsvilles top wrestlers dropped the team to a 10th invitational place finish in a at West high last week. The warriors face the meets winner, Alta, in a duel meet today (Thursday) in the Hawks gym. Craig Stauffer, 126 pounds, and John McNeill, 145, were thrown in the losers bracket after first day losses and though each won his next three matches, both finished in fifth place for the meet. Taylorsville Coach Mike Johnson said he expected the two juniors to finish about third in the tournament, but that the opening round losses made that impossible. Jim Rogers, a senior, finished in second place in his division, while Sean Carraway, a junior, finished third. Overall, the Warriors totaled 48 points for the tournament, comtotal racked up pared to the by the champion Hawks. Despite the disparity in numbers, Johnson said he is not concerned. The Falcons are highly regarded in Region One, but Clark says they arent 14 points better than the Cougars. After some early turnovers, Clark had his guards breaking the press, but the front line was unable to turn its advantage into points. Clearfield jumped off to a quick 0 lead, extended that to 3 at the half and after three periods. Rebounding for the game was about even and Clark felt his team showed him some good things, but they couldnt get the ball to go down. Hes hoping the Cougars will have found the magic that led them past Judge tomorrow (Friday) when they host Layton in a 7:30 contest. Brett Falk led all scorers Friday with 18 (4, 10x15) and Rob Lambert added 11 (5, 1x2), but there werent big numbers from the forwards.
