Show r 3B SAYS SHE A tax on Coke! How could they? I Theres just so much money you can get out of thats probably true, While also going to get me. Unless, of course, I give up alcohol and theyre in a state where a percentage shuns those substances. So here we are, facing a tax on soft drinks. The legislators who are proposing this boon to the state coffers will aim the money at education. If it passes. At one time, it was considered a joke, but I think this soft drinks. There is quite a case that could be made for that. Not liking diet drinks, Ive threatened on more than one occasion to stop drinking Coke and its counterparts. I think Ill make it stick if they really do decide to tax it. There are all sorts of substitutes one can be perfectly larger-than-norm- Thursday, Dec. 8, 1983 A by Michele Bartmess time theyre serious. The failure to fund any increase in education dollars last year has, as we all knew it would, caught up with them and now they are trying a number of creative ways to raise the money, not only to catch up, but also to fund reforms. Their logic on the soda pop proposal is that this tax will hit hardest those who have created the need - i.e. families with children. guess those of us who have sat by and smugly supported the sin taxes are going to get our just reward. WEST VAILEY VIEW contented with. Now dont show this to your legislator, I don't want them coming up with any more bright ideas. My favorite substitute is grape juice (nonfermented), followed closely by cranberry juice and lemonade. And of course, theres always water. Ive decided that soft drinks are more a habit than anything. Since they have gotten rather expensive anyway, and common sense says they arent really good for ones health, Sen. Bill Barton, the bills major sponsor, may be doing me a favor. Ive already had some experience in doing without. When I go to a restaurant and a soft drink adds more than half a buck to the cost of a meal, I more and more frequently opt for water. And I find that I like it just fine. First thing you know, theyll find a way to punish us for that. Water has a lot going for it. Especially when its cold. Fast food restaurants are probably going to be hit hardest if people take the water option. The proposed five percent tax, if it were actually aimed at soft drinks bought at your favorite restaurant and fast food chain, would add about 234 cents to the cost of the latter part of your typical burger, fries and a medium Coke. Since menus do not normally deal with odd numbers (except five), youll pay a nickel more - thats in addition to the extra sales tax that went into effect this year. Actually, I suspect theyll tax the syrup and who knows what actual effect it will have. Soft drinks are a huge part of a fast food restaurants total income. Ive done more than my fair share of boosting that income. But Im going to think twice when I'm out on a photo schedule about pulling in to order -- Anyone wishing for more information regarding the events may call Eldie Marshall, 973-677- Apgood BURIED. But as one who hasnt added anything to Utahs problem" - the highest student-ag- e population in the nation feel like I'm paying my fair share - hundreds of dollars in property taxes, plenty of sales tax and who knows what other sources we contribute to. You know as well as 1 do that this tax is going to do just what they want it to do - generate dollars. How many people gave up beer after last year's legislative session? If they really want to raise money in Utah, they ougnt to tax ice cream - that would be a true beer drinkers revenge. Of course if they honestly wanted to hit hardest those who contribute bodies to the school system, theyd have proposed a tax on milk - or on small shoes. Im personally going to lobby for milk. 1 -- states dentists The will un- doubtedly lobby against this tax. Actually dentists hate tooth decay. Most of them would be delighted if people would stop ingesting all that sugar. And your family physician would be ecstatic. You see, requires salt and we all know the relationship between salt and hig;n blood pressure. Legislative analysts have projected that, a five percent tax on soda pop would raise about $10 million - toward the $100,000 or so they want to add to public school funding.
