We do these things because we know what the penalties are for not doing them higher dentist bills, citations, and perhaps an unidentified dog picked up by animal control officers. The results of our inaction in these instances are easy to measure, so we put up with a little inconvenience to avoid them. The results of not being able to vote in an election because we felt we didnt have the time to get registered are not as tangible, but they are more serious. , A citizen who makes a habit of voting is naturally more interested in studying the issues as each campaign rolls around. A practiced voter is often a better voter, one who knows the candidates and has watched the performance of those he helped to elect in past years. We know a CLEANERS WE ALSO SPECIALIZE IN FURNITURE CLEANING. 773-500- who jokes that he will vote someday as soon as someone is nominated who deserves his vote. Each year he says this year Im really going to get registered and vote, and each year he is just to busy to get the job done. This man is being governed by people he never took the time to get to know, people he never chose to support or defeat, and he is a man who feels alienated from government in general. Tuesday is the last chance to register for the Nov. 4 election. It really is not very difficult to register. Registration agents are located in all neighborhoods, usually within walking distance. ... -- tax-relie- f, law-make- rs employees of State and Local government use less of our tax dollars. Davis County just got hit with an additional tax for our schools. Its time we asked for an accounting. Eugene J. Wider Layton Review Editor: I wish to take issue with you on your recent editorial in the October 9th issue of the Lakeside Review. Several items have been misrepresented in that article. East Layton incorporated as a city because the area residents needed an adequate water system, which Layton City, who only four years earlier had incorporated, could not provide. That was in 1936. Since then East Layton residents have been paying their own way, receiving a reasonable level of service in return. The deplorable streets mentioned can only be applied to one street in the city. Rainbow Drive. An improvement district has been approved for that street which will provide curb, gutter, sidewalk, . and paving. Bids will be received within two weeks for this work. Other collector roads are adequate for the small amount of traffic they receive. They will be improved as more development occurs on those roads. They are rural roads serving a similar situation as roads in west Layton and some east bench areas in Layton. In some cases they are in better condition than Laytons. East Layton is currently building a park adjacent to City Hall. It will be in operation by next summer and includes a soccer field, tennis courts, regulation softball and Little League diamonds, picnic areas, and a bowery. It will be completely landscaped and have a good sprinkling system. While commercial business has been limited in the past, a growing interest by several businesses has recently occurred. Grand Central recently attempted to build within the city. A shopping center located on Highway 89 received approval to build. Both were stopped because of the tight money market during the heart of the current recession. I feel that within a year both these will begin to develop again. In addition there are several other tracts of land that are zoned for commercial development. All these will definitely aid the City. As a city, we need to solve our own problem and not look to other governmental units to solve them for us. Neal Scheel Citizens for East Layton ft 34995 XL-1- 0 this week. I was traveling on Interstate 15 toward the southern end of Davis County when a semi truck in the lane next to me decided to changelanes. Luckily I saw his blinkers momentarily before he began to move. I swerved quickly into the outside lane and just barely missed a collision with the rear wheels of the double rig. I never had time to check to see if anyone was on my left. It was only later that I realized how lucky I had been. I got ill thinking about what could have happened had there been another vehicle in the left lane. They, and for that fact I, too, would not have had a chance. My impulses had taken over and I had reacted immediately to avoid the hazard that presented itself to me with only seconds to respond. The time factor did not allow a survey of the scene around me. Anyway, this near miss and the realization of how close I cam ereally made me aware of the hazards travel can present. Im just glad that the traffic was light on that particular afternoon. I think everyone needs to be aware of the hazards when driving. I think that if everyone could become more conscious of others on the road wed see a lot fewer accidents and perhaps even save some lives. I think this is a responsibility that each and every driver needs to assume when they get behind the wheel. I, for one, would hate to feel that I had been the cause of an accident that took anyones life, much less my own. I think that if everyone starts to assume the responsibility for others and is aware of the hazards that do exist well all enjoy driving so much more. Two articles, one by Staff Writer Mr. Croft and the other by the editor, seem to be conflicting and entirely out of context. Your editorial is biased to say the least while Mr. Croft states that basically those that own the newspaper are the only ones with the right to a hearty opinion that can be expressed in print. Is this really Freedom of the Press as Mr. Croft calls it or plain 'Bullyism. I agree that you have your right to your opinion, but needless to say the other side of the coin should also be shown. ; I dont suppose you would print this tetter, in as much as it totally conflicts with your point of view, but Ill express the views of many Utahns. First, a little research will disclose that Utah is one of the most heavily taxed States in the Union; so why shouldnt the citizenry be concerned. ;.I would tend to believe that Utah collects more sales tax per capita than most other states because everything is taxed except prescribed medicines. This includes labor that the garage mechanic charges when he tunes up your car. What kind of a sale is that? A sales tax should be limited to the material things a merchant handles, not labor or associated services. I agree that the removal of the four It percent tax on food is wrong should be the complete tax five or five whichever the case may and one-ha- lf be. . Limiting the property tax as specified in Proposal B, would injure the state financially, you say. This means that the State Highway department will have to use one man to put up a roadside sign rather than three, with one man working while two watch. It means that our public servants will have to do an honest days work for an honest days pay. It means that our school system will have to get back down to the three Rs rather than extra curricular activities such as football, basketball, creative dance, and other such trivials. It means that our educators will have to educate rather than sit in the staff lounge and it also means that the children will be able to read and write when they graduate. As Mr. Jarvis, the California Philosopher recently stated, Well hand the governmental departments a budget to work on not a blank check. If we have to were ever to get start somewhere.
