Conglomerate Sold Last Year Sunset Sports Stores in Five States Now ; By LUCINDA M.SCHUFT : Staff Writer SUNSET From meager beginnings as a two store army surplus business, Sunset Sports Center has become a multi million dollar enterprise with locations in five states. ; Locally, Sunset Sports has recently moved back to a Sunset location from Roy. The original store, which was the namesake of the firm, had been moved out of Sunset when Interstate 15 was constructed. ' Drew Savage has worked for Sunset Sports since He said he can remember the old Sunset Store. It was called Sunset Army and Navy then., The building was a yellow cinder block structure which was long and narrow. It was located next to the Bamberger tracks. The Bamberger Line ran through Idaho and Utah at that il. 1 time, he said. Then the highway moved us to the Roy location, Savage said. The firm started to expand its operations when business began to grow. Helen Draper, who handles training and communications for UDISCO, which distributes to all of the Sunset stores, said that 31 Sunset stores will be open by the end of this year. They are located in Utah, Washington, Arizona., Wyoming and Idaho. She said that Richared L. McGillis, the founder of the stores, started the surplus business with $1,000 in 1953. Sales this year for Sunset Sports are expected to be around $80 million, according to Tom Crockett, assistant director of advertising for Insight Advertising which is another part of the McGillis firms which grew out of the original Sunset Surplus Mrs. Draper said the original stores had been in Sunset and Ogden. After Me McGillis started the Sunset store, which was the second in the chain, he began to go into sporting goods. Crockett said that when McGillis started into sporting goods he was originally bringing things in from the Orient. This was a carry over from the surplus business in which he had bought many of the items from the Orient, Crockett said. He still takes two buying trips a year there, Crockett said. Crockett said that this source of supplies presented a problem for the sports stores. They had difficulty obtaining name brands. Joleen Goff, director of advertising for said, Since that time Sunset Sports has received two awards for the selling of name brand products. In 1973 they were named the Top Name Brand Dealer by the National Brand Names Foundation, and in 1978 they received the Sphynx Award which is given by the Sporting Goods Dealers. The award they received was for the best multiple unit dealer. The Sunset chain began to expand as the business grew. Mrs. Goff said, They had the philosophy of owning the buildings they occupied rather than leasing them, she said. Crockett said this is still the case. The current ownership is continuing with extremely fast expansion. He said that as the locations become available they will continue to grow. Other businesses which sprang up with the Sunset chain include the Advertising, White Mountain Sports Wear, and Factory Liquidators. The advertising firm handles the commurcations for the businesses associated with the Sunset chain. Mrs. Goff said Factory Liquidators was added to give the firm extra buying power. It is a seconds outlet, she said. White Mountain Sports Wear, located in Provo, manufactures down and polyester-fille- d clothing items. They also make nylon type products, Mrs. Goff said. This includes windbreakers and body wallets. McGillis sold the conglomerate of businesses he had built up from the Sunset Sports beginnings to Malone and Hyde Inc., a Georgia-base- d firm, last Mrs. Draper said there are 1,000 employees with the Sunset chain at this time. Its not the same kind of operation now, Savage said. business. Hatch Lauds Business Bill h, Tel. We would iike to pass ojong a recipe shell never find anywhere ... one that contains all the ingredients for an unhealthy situation. The ingredients are easily found during any heating season and can be blended quickly. "Take (Daily) one houseful of natural air. Circulate or radiate the heated air through the heating distribution system. Be absolutely sure that all moisture is removed from the air as it is heated and after it passes through the distribution system, convey the dry air to all parts of the house. "Serve continuously (daily) to everyone in the family, and keep repeating this procedure as often as required." For thse who fear our sanity, we would like to explain that this "recipe" actually takes place quite automatically every day duripg the heating season. It's a "recipe" for creating unhealthy, too dry air; and by serving it to the family. Its side effects are often a health or cleanliness'problem. As we have explained in previous articles, too dry air allows dirt and dust to settle, robs moisture from clothing, furniture and fixtures, and may lead to sore throats, stuffy noses, chills, and dry hacking coughs. Of course, we would like to pass along a recipe for combatting the effects of too dry air in a home. Here it is...in a hiqhlv condensed form. "Buy a PAYNE humidifier. Install on furnace plenum, and to every houseful of air, mix the proper moisture supplied by the humidifier. Distribute moisture to all parts of the house. Serve continuously during the heating season when dry air becomes a problem." For Wayne R.
