Show Strong All the Way Through Lakeside Review, October 23, 1980, Page 3B Oepfh Gives Weber Oistamice Teiinni Advantage By BOB BULLOCK Staff Writer four days of distance per week, often upwards of 12 miles a session and an g additional two days of speed workouts, this was just another practice. With one half of the season behind them, Weber State sits on a comfortable record. Yet before them lies the most crucial test of the season; the Big Sky Conference Meet scheduled for November 15th at Boise. What advantages does Weber bring to the Big Sky? According to the confident Hislop its experience and depth. We have the strongest cross country team weve ever had. Its mostly a senior group but we have some juniors," he stated. lung-searin- OGDEN It was a cold and blustery autumn afternoon in northern Utah and yet despite the bitter wind and the frosty evidence of the oncoming winter which covered the hillsides above Wildcat Stadium, the Weber State Cross Country Team had already taken themselves through a rigorous interval workout under the watchful eye of their coach, Chuck Hislop. But training in such conditions was not an unusual occurence. For the members of the Weber State team, who have relegated themselves throughout the season to a spartan regimen consisting of three to 3-- 0 As to the teams diversity, the coach pointed to the closeness in the performances of the six man squad. Im not positive about our first and second positions but this year our sixth man is stronger than our fourth men have ever been, Hislop remarked. Citing a recent meet at the University of Utah Coach Hislop recalled a situation where the top five Weber runners came in within 50 seconds of each other and the 5 runners were a mere 18 seconds apart. 2-- Such strength is uncommon for many college running programs but according to the Weber coach, the emerging Wildcat dynasty is the Wildcats Face Boise In Meet pre-distri- The 1980 NCAA Cross Country champions, Texas-E- l Paso, will be on hand and are a hands down favorite to win the meet. Other teams include, Wyoming, BYU, Utah, Utah State, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State along with some junior college teams. But the molding of a top flight distance runner does not begin and end with good weather and a well structured training schedule. In an effort to keep his boys on top, Coach Hislop stresses perserverance and discipline. Often we get young men who arent necessarily the best in the state but we have a good rate of people staying with it for four years. This he indicates is uncommon in many schools. In addition to the discipline demonstrated on the track however, Hislop points to the dedication that manifests itself in everything the Weber State team does. Im fortunate to have an outstanding group of young people to work with, he continued. All of them are B students or above and just outstanding . all the way around. When you have that type of individual its very easy to keep them going. Is there any one individual in the Wildcat team that is responsible for I dont think there is any doubt about UTEPs strength, Hislop said. But it should be an interesting battle for second place. The Wildcats are coming off a win in the Color Country Invitational last Friday in Cedar City, Utah. Weber State had 29 points, followed by NAU with 38. SUSC was third and Utah fourth. Doug Friedli was Webers top place winner, taking third in a time of 26:27. Norberto Segura was fourth (26:31) and Rex Hohnholt, fifth (26:34). Keenan Hart of Southern Utah State won it in a time of 25:52.8, defeating Mark Lomeland of Northern Arizona who had a time of 26: 17.6. I was pleased with our balance, said Hislop. Our first five runners were within 32 seconds of each other and only 50 seconds separated our first seven runners, so were starting to get a good balance in our times.
