Show Page 8B, Lakeside Iie lew, October 23, 1980 Sunset Girls Take Championship V-Ba- ll By PHIL KIRKW OOD Sports Editor Students at Sunset Junior High School have had quite a bit to cheer about in recent weeks. Not only -- did their girls volleyball team win this years Davis County Championship, but they did it with a perfect record. This was one of the best teams I have ever coached, remarked coach Cristie Nicholas who has guided Sunset to three consecutive championships. They practiced hard all season and .played the game the way it should be played. Nicholas said she was especially pleased with the two wins over Kaysville and South Davis late in the season. After losing the first game on both occasions, (each match consists of best two out of three games) Sunset came back to pound out the remaining two games for the match. Every girl on the team showed a lot of poise for their age, said Nicholas. They have a lot to be proud about. Nicholas says the most difficult part about coaching Jr. High students in a sport like volleyball is that they usually dont know much about it when they try out. I have to look for potential talent rather than talent that is already there, said Nicholas. From there I have to teach them everything especially the difference between team volleyball and recreation volleyball. Nicholas says she stresses the fundamental skills like bumping, setting, serving overhand and hitting while at the same time implanting a team-wor- k style of play. She said the girls developed the skills early in the season and thats the main reason why the season was a success. Two other reasons why Sunset played strong was the team support between players and the avid spectator support of the entire student body. My team gets along together and that really makes it easy, said Nicholas. Everyone is happy with the role they played this year and they all pulled for each other. We also packed the gym for every home game and that made the girls play their 8-- 0 come-from-behi- 'best. Nicholas says her leading players this year were Mandy Henneberger, best setter; Sue Gronau, most DAVIS COUNTY Championship Volleyball Team: Bottom left to right: Mandy Henneberger, Raye Lyne Hayes, Julie Paulsen, Ruth Blankenship, Sue consistant; and Raye Lyne Hayes and Julie Paulsen, best Although Nicholas enjoys winning, (her teams over the last four years) she says having are her players learn the sport well is her most important goal each year. Winning is fun, but its not a must. I mostly want them to learn enough about the sport to play in high school and possibly get an athletic scholarship somewhere," she said.
