Show Page 6B, Lakeside Review, October 23, 1980 jr' - Take Their Football Seriously Clearfield flAn By PHIL KIRKWOOD Sports Editor If by chance youve CLEARFIELD been driving by Fisher Park in ' Clearfield on Wednesday nights this Fall, youve probably been wondering 'what all the hysteria is. That is, the 50 to 60 grown men running up and down ' the field with strips of plastic hanging from their waists, yelling, screaming, knocking each other down, grappling in "the dirt and so on. And youve probably also noticed large spectator crowds gathered on the sideline, yelling, screaming and jumping up and down with equal vigor. But, if you stop and take a closer look, youll see its just a football game and for the men who flag football play, its just their way of relaxing after a hard days work. the Clearfield Recreation Department, started the adult flag football league this fall. He wanted to involve adults in the recreation program and the sport flag football seemed like a natural. I started the league because I Thomas, Roger Director of wanted to give the men in the com Junior High Football munity a chance to get some good exercise as well as relive their old high school days as a jock, said Thomas. The program gives the men a sense of belonging to something, competition, unity and a chance to spend some good times with friends. Thomas scheduled the league for eight teams with between 15 and 20 players on each squad. The program was an instant success as all eight slots were filled by early September and each team had a full roster., I had a feeling the program would be popular, said Thomas. These men really take the league seriously. They have regular practice sessions and play the game with real blood and guts. Thomas says that because the heat of competition and emotion among both players and fans runs at such a peak, he had to increase the number of officials from two to three to keep the game under control. The games are supposed to be for fun and recreation and they are, but it still gets pretty rough out there sometimes, said Thomas. We get our a super job in not letting the games get out of hand. Flag football rules are pretty much the same as regular football except the field is only 60 yards long and is played with nine players instead of 11. Also, the time is kept in 25 minute running halfs and extra points are run instead of kicked. Each team is allowed one timeout per half. The league is constructed in a round- - officials from the Northern Utah Umpires Association and theyve done robin fashion with each team playing all other teams once. At the end of five games, Country Garden is on top at 0 followed by Am trak Superliners, No Names, Cougars, 2 y Jaybirds, K-- 7 Ben Country Cavemen, and Slow Starters at Lomond, The league is scheduled to end (barring bad weather) on October 22 bn with playoffs or , make-up- s ' November 1. , , 5-- 4-- 3-- plays in the first pass from Yoshimura and frame for outran the defense for a overtime Redskin tight end Curt touchdown.
