Show I REFLEX : Clearfield vs Layton Battling For Their Very Lives Keith Duncan Journal Sports Four more quarters and shes history! LAYTON AND THKSK could be the dandiest of them all! Lancer-Falco- n ings for when there e is r 4 football battles have always had the makintensity but it always means a little more play-of- f talk involved. AND FOLKS, there is plenty at stake in this game when you're talking about playoffs. In the final Region One game of 82, Clearfield travels to Layton to meet the Lancers in a 7:30 p.m. duel. JOURNAL BULLETIN LEADER, OCTOBER 21, 1982 effort helped Layton earn their first Region One victory and keep alive their hopes for a state playoff berth. 1982 Laytons Petroff Turns Hero Keith Duncan Journal Sports LAYTON - As Mike PetrofT himself put it, A chance like the one 1 had last Friday night comes only once in a lifetime. A lot of people never get to experience something like that. THE LANCERS skinny, senior kicker, who never in his entire life had played football before being a sophomore in high school, booted four field goals and an extra point last Friday before a home crowd that helped to give victory over Weber High. Petroffs 19-1- 8 I KNEW I would neverforget that moment, whether 1 made it or not, said Petroff, After it went through I cant remember a thing except for everyone mobbing me all the way to the team room. The last second three-pointwas un-- . s most Petroff memorable moment doubtedly in sports to this point. er MIKE NAILED a 32 yarder before half time to help Layton grab a 10-- 6 halftime lead. During the final 24 minutes he booted ones from 30 yards, another from 32 and his featured 36 yarder. W'hen Petroff first came out for football, it wasnt until his sophomore year at Layton. He didnt have the distance for kickoffs so the coaches used him solely for PATs and field goals. IT WAS against Roy that he got his first real chance to kick. In that sophomore contest he with ten seconds left to help nailed a win that game. He had two PATs in addition to that. As a junior he played only two varsity games but it was last summer that made the difference. ize about Mike is the hours of kicking he spends down on the field with his dad (John), said Gary Hansen, the head coach. There have been many nights that youd find him down kicking away w ith a lot of footballs, his dad attending him all the time, continued Hansen. People finally got a real look at some of the dedication and persistence Petroff really has. MIKE CLAIMS that during the summer months it wasnt unusual to spend up to an hour and a half kicking. I think some of my friends were impressed that Id practice so long, when I still didnt have a clean shot at making the varsity team, said Petroff. Besides winning football games with last second field goals, Petroff is also a w restler for Mike Hansen during the winter. LAST SEASON it w as Petroff w ho wrestled for the championship at the 119 spot and settled for second place. During the state tournament he won two matches and lost two. Up until the 13 point effort Friday, Mike had only 13 points up until the Weber Game. His holder for the season has been senior linebacker, Jeff Moon. The Falcons chances might be more solid having two victories but the Lancers (with one win) are enjoying the winning streak they re presently in the middle of. For that matter the Falcons e too are on a winning streak and would like nothing better than to continue it right into the playoffs. As soon as Clearfield had disposed of Roy (28-0- ) last Friday night, the kids immediately started talking about Layton. Scott Tremea, a Falcon wide receiver commented, Got to get the Lancers, I know we are ready for them. two-gam- NORM TAYLOR, one of Clearfields star defensive lineman said, "Were starting to peak. Look out Layton. At Layton there was as ever much excitement. Last Tuesday it was cornerback, Myron Cooper who stated, Were pumped up." Cooper who didn't see much action in last years Laytom w in over Clearfield said, "This time it means a lot more because Im playing. BUT FOR former safety. Kenny Heath, he wont be playing punting because of a neck injury sustained against Sky View. Just because I wont be in the game all the time doesnt mean wont feel the intensity. Itll be just as strong on the sidelines as anywhere, Heath said. Laytons Craig Kennedy looked at the game too, calling it the biggest game of the season, he stated. I guess its more than just for bragging rights this time. If we lose were other than doing the 1 through." GARY HANSEN, who has a lot of resiect for Clearfields 1982 squad, said his squad had experienced enough wins that they knew what it felt like to win. Most important is that the kids know how to prepare themselves for the game and I think they will, said Hansen. After being out of the playoffs last season, Hansen would like to get back in. Clearfields Brent Hancock said his preparing plans for Layton wouldn't be any different. We know where we stand. Just like I said before the Roy game, we control our own destiny, were his comments. HANCOCK has been in thse kind of situations many times in the past. When the head coach at Bonneville Highs Lakers and unbeaten were in desperate need of a win over Sky View one year. The Lakers ended up beating the Bobcats 42-- 0 with a skimpy and found themselves in the quarter-final- s top-rank- 6-- 4 mark. Were healthy and mentally ready, what more could we ask for," said Hancock, Were treating it as if it were the Super Bowl. THE LAYTON-Clearfiel- d game has all the variables to Last year when these two school contest. a make great high teams met. Layton pulled out the victory even though it didnt mean anything to them playoff wise. It was however the Lancers only w in of 81 and left Clearfield winless in region play. Some of the key players in this contest have to be Clearfield's Tood Blair and Lastons Mike Petroff. With Blair running the ball with much more authority, teams cant key on Dean Foulger anymore. During the past two weeks against Cottonwood and Roy, Blair has run well on punt returns and done exceptional in chewing up yardage during the game. AND JUST as Layton will contend with Blair, the Falcons must keep the Lancers away from the uprights. If they dont, Petroff could very well end up burying them just as he did to Weber last week with 13 points. Petroff has yet to miss a field goal this year. 99 Itoei mail iiife atoutf savmiM msssm MaQIjjb Last call to get in the phone book! Its almost time for your new telephone directory to go to press.
