Show REFLEX JOURNAL BULLETIN LEADER, OCTOBER 21, 1982 ' Girls Cross Country Sorenson Leads KAYSVILLE - With Davis Cindy Sorenson sweeping first place in last weeks dual meet against Viewmont, the Dart cross country girls ended their region dual meet season with a 2 league mark. -- 3-- IN THE meet against the Vikes, Davis Wendy Hunter placed second right behind Cindy. Julie Molyneaux was the next best runner for the Darts as she finished fourth in the final dual race. I think we've got a very good chance of finishing strong in region and state, said first Shaw. "With Julie we've got a very Nev.. from in Elko, moving solid chance of competing for top honors." year head coach, Mike UNFORTUNATELY though the season, volleyball games and cross country meets have been held on the same day. Consequently some girls have not been able to run and play volleyball at the same time. But with the upcoming region and state meets, Shaw says all his girls w ill be in place to help Davis try for a league title, may be even a state title. Lancer Sophs Still Unbeaten Keith Duncan Journal Sports - You almost hate to see it LAYTON said Doug Moon of the Lancer's sophomore football season, "The kids are really starting to jell right now . WITH SEVEN to eight better than average skill people and a group of linemen that have Layton finally put it together, the first-yekids have yet to lose a game and have only Clearfield standing in their w ay of a perfect season. The Lancers have blitzed opponents like a 6 romp over Highland, 12-- 0 win over Bonneville, 40-- 6 killing of Woods Cross, drubbing of View mont and a 28-- 0 shutout of end," Davis fell to Viewmont in Wednesdays Region Meet, but hopes for a better showing in State. Fabulous Five 38-1- 28-1- 2 Darts Smell Victory Keith Duncan Reflex Sports mores are undefeated thus far). KAYSVILLE - Just about anything in this city takes a backseat to the heroics of Davis Dart football, except perhaps the excitement the cross country team has stirred up in recent weeks. -- ' THOUGH MIKE Shaws troops fell to Viewmont 5 in last weeks championship dual meet run, it was only the first loss the Darts have suffered in Region Four and sets the stage for this weeks region meet at Sugarhouse Park and next weeks state meet at Sugarhouse again. (The state meet will be held Oct. 27.) Should the Darts keep up the same kind of momentum theyve had to this point, things should go right down to the wire between them and the Vikes. It wouldnt be surprising at all to see these two teams finish No. 1 and 2 in the region and state meets. WITH FIVE strong runners as their nucleus, the Darts should without any question improve upon the 11th place finish they had in last imyears state meet. But just as they have Viewmont proved, so have the Vikings. finished second to Bonneville last season in the state meet but have improved their times this season and are the Darts biggest hurdle for state title hopes. The Dart's fabulous five include Matt Kimball, Ken Hirshi, Brian Bacon, Del Espinoza and Troy Johnson. Matt is a junior while the rest are seniors. The sixth and seventh spots have been filled by a number of talented sophomores including John Kimball, Steve Gregg, Martinez. (Sopho Kenny Robbins or Gary 30-2- par JOHNSON, one of the key members of the team and a kid who has made unlimited progress this season, commented, I was sitting in a math class last spring when Coach (Kent) Drayyer (athletic director) walked into Mr. Shaws room and said we needed a new cross country coach for next year. I said to myself, They cant change coaches my senior year, it will fall apart, but Shaw got serious. He ran us hard through the summer and in my opinion has been the difference with this teaqi. Del Espinosa said cross country was getting to be a big pain and at times said he couldnt wait for it to get over with. We were a pretty close bunch last year, said Del, But this year has given us something to shoot for. We just decided that eleventh place was not good e enough for us. Espinosa runs the races in spring track also. ITS A close group of kids, said Shaw, the first year head coach. We have no dominate runners, maybe only two that will finish in the top 10. But all of them could easily finish in the top 20. The five top Daff runners run so close together in meets that seldom do they finish outside 45 seconds of each other over a three-mil- e course. Of course the key to beating Viewmont will be to place their top five as close to View-montop two as possible. Viewmont beat but the two teams split Davis in victories over each other at invitationals this year. MOON SAID the first thing he tries to do with sophomore kids is to teach fundamentals, especially with the junior high program no longer in existence. It takes a little longer to get some of the things w e think ought to be done, completed, said Moon. Future years of Lancer football certainly look optimistic with last year's sophomore squad going 2 and this seasons team standing undefeated. 6-- WE ALSO TRY to impress winning upon ROBERT Ferneau is another talented kid His stats against Weber prove that. Ferneau had four interceptions, he scored two TDs and threw for one more TD from his tailback position. "He's a super little athlete who has no real size, but knows how to shed tackles." said Moon. Another is Mike Roberts at running back, defensiv e end and strong safety . Still another is Darren Hayes at fullback. Bart Vernon has come on strong at wingback and strongside linebacker. JIM BATCHELOR and Todd Miya are a couple the coaches say will stick anyone hard. I think Im most proud about the offensive and defensive lines. said Moon, "I think Mike and started w ith zero' w hen we first got going but through hard work and the kids caring, we've got quite a nucleus to build around. 1 JIM CORTWRIGHT was one they expressed might be the best lineman on the team. Brent Higgs has also been a good one. "If we ,nd a couple good tackles, we'll be right there, said Hansen. VOTE I BELIEVE one of the factors about our CAROL DEAN PAGE season has been Viewmont. Theyve received more attention in the papers and have been our No. 1 competition all year. It has definitely sparked us, said Ken. Brian Bacon, who may be one of the finest soccer players at the school, commented, There have been some guys on this team that have shown me what some real drive will do. Some of them decided to go out and best me in the meets and its all made for a very competitive spirit, but a highly successful team. pre-seas- ho WERE HAVING fun this year," said Moon, "We've thrown a lot of little curves here and there. We've used some different formations and bottle-ca- p plays to lighten things up. The kids have enjoyed it, especially because we're winning 1 guess. Mike Hansen, who assists with the sophomores, stated, There is a good spirit among the kids, they really enjoy winning. It isn't a bunch that will lay down on ya." Moon. friends. ts w last weeks dual meet due to sickness, ONE OF the keys to our strength has been the fact that a few of us wanted to go out and beat Brian (Bacon) who had everyones number the year before. We worked dang hard through the summer, putting in quite a few miles. I think weve got our best chance at taking state this year, said Kimball. Kimball and Ken Hirschi have battled for Davis top spot all year. Hirschi explains that the rivalry between the two has been there since junior high school. Last year we had a good time, but... I didnt realize how bad we were last year until we began taking off this year. said Moon. "Then hopefully it will carry over into their junior and senior years." One of the skilled people who Moon and Hansen have been impressed with is quarterback Brian Bailey w ho moved in from Oklahoma. Moon said that since he's been coaching sophomore football, he claims Bailey might be the headiest, best QB prospect the Lancers have had. Of course he was quick to mention the exception of Mark Vigil who of course didn't play sophomore football at Layton. "He's quick and he runs the option w ell." said them." KILGROW TWISTED the knee in a practice session on Wednesday Oct. 13th. He underwent surgery last Friday afternoon, the day his teammates beat Woods Cross to clain the region championship. Im sure weve got Kilgrow for the year, said Sawley, But I hope sincerely that his 5. Shawn is reported as a fine wrestler. HE IS A CLASS young man and has done a great job for us, said Sawley who personally and as part of the coaching staff felt Shawn was a big reason why Davis is where it is right now. Everyone puts their physical safety on the line when they play this sport, its just the facts of football. We just want him back next year because he is a fine football player and a big part of our success, said Sawley. Dont Take A Chance!
