Show REFLEX JOURNAL BULLETIN LEADER, OCTOBER 21, 1982 Blitz Royals Falcons Play Almost Perfect Keith Duncan Bulletin Sports CLEARFIELD - About the only thing Roy won last Friday night was the opening coin toss and knowing before hand how the final score would read, they may have wished the lights had never come back on. -- A rejuvenated Todd Blair (left), Clearfields near perfect playing, the air, while Mark Wilson (top) breather after running 81 yards along with kept Roy in takes a for a Falcon touchdown. IT TOOK A few minutes for the lights to get their acWraight, but it took the Falcons even less time as they romped to an easy 28-- victory over Roy and improved their chances fora state playoff berth. It had been said the week before the game that the Falcons had yet to play one complete good game. Against Roy however, Clearfield did it all, from star to finish. Not a single turnover was committed and very few assignments were missed. 0 HOPEFULLY it will propel us to bigger and better things, said a very elated Brent Flancock. Senior safety, Bubba Conley, claimed a few days before the game that if the team could come up w ith the right frame of mind, they'd be tough to beat. Well, Bubba got things going Clearfield's way rather quickly. On the Royals first possession he intercepted a pass and 44 yards later it was senior quarterback, for the Mark Wilson diving in from two-yarFalcon's first score. Ray Dixon then proceeded to boot the first of four perfect PAT attempts. LATER IN the second quarter it was Conley again with his quick hands and deceptive This moves that fooled the Roy signal-calle- r. time he returned his second interception to the 31 yard line. He (Roy's quarterback) was throwing it right to me, said Conley. With Dean Foulger and Todd Blair busting his big runs, Clearfield closed in on the goal line again until Foulger finally stuck it in from one yard out. That left the Falcons with a 0 i halftime lead. Falcon Sophs Winnin trounce of Roy in which Greg Boseman threw for two touchdowns and Sean Open-shapicked off two interceptions. We feel very strongly about winning every of game, said Hansen. "It's not just a matter to letting everyone play, even though wed like to is first Our obligation somehow do that. establish a winning attitude because we feel if the kids learn it as sophomores, theyll do it as juniors and hopefully as seniors. OF COURSE this isnt a perfect thing we can rely on, but its a pretty good barometer of how to measure things," he said. The Falcons started the season with wins over Viewmont and Woods Cross, then lost to Davis and Weber. Hansen says he feels good record to this point even though about the there isn't an exceptional amount of talent on 28-- 0 Keith Duncan Bulletin Sports CLEARFIELD - The philosophy of running sophomore and junior varsity football teams at Clearfield High is to build a winning tradition. WE HOPE that once the players are seniors they love winning and have been bred to do it, said sophomore coach, Craig Hansen. Well, whatever the formula has been it's worked. Hansens sophomore troops were 3 before their final clash Thursday with Layton. Hansen however, knew the final bout with the Lancers wouldnt be easy since their rivals hadnt been beaten all year long. CLEARFIELDS most recent victory was a -- 3 the team. Theyve just played good team ball, were Hansen's comments. "There really hasnt been any outstanding performers. TALKING about some of the other outstanding sophomore teams in the area, Hansen Davis has the finest sophomore remarked, team I've coached against in 12 years. Wow, what a team. They've got exceptional talent and they execute just like the varsity club does. I really can't remember a finer group of kids in many years. Ive got a lot of respect for Layton team. Theyve already thumped, killed some of the teams we barely got by, said Hansen. BESIDES Openshaw and Boseman, Dino Porter has been a key member of the club. His work at fullback and middle linebacker starts in practice and doesnt end till the game's over with. Tight end Kelly Anderson has also been a key part of Clearfields success. His play has also been sparkling at a linebacker spot. "He's hard hitting and has good hands, said Hansen. OTHER KEY members of the club include tailback Robert Henderson, defensive lineman Kevin Williams, offensive guard Scott Ferrin, offensive tackle Guy Checketts, nose guard Bruce Browning, tackle Mike Archuleta and split end James Nickerson. Others include Dennis Langford, David Naylor, Kenny Stoker and Todd Ferguson. Ryan Reed, who once played his high school sports at the school, was Hansen's assistant through the year. 14-- BUT JUST as the offense were doing their job, so was a fired-u- p defense. Kent Nye sacrificed his body on several plays but always got back up and was ready for the next series. Tom Butler and Dirk Swallow preyed relentlessly on Roys quarterback, sacking him with a vicious hit. ALL NIGHT the Falcons were swarming on Roy runners and receivers. Norm Taylor, a senior defensive lineman noted, "We were gang tackling all the way. We simply wanted it more than they did. 1 think we're starting to peak and what a great time to do it," J.C. VonCoIlin, who has found the transition from nose guard to linebacker a challenge, commented, It's taken a while to adjust to it but I'm doing the job now. VonCoIlin was a big plug for the Falcons making several unassisted and assisted tackles. His most noticeable hit came in the second quarter when he wrapped Roy's Doug Nielsen a good one, causing him to fumble. Nye recovered and it later led to Foulger's first touchdown. Ski School On Schedule when we were sophomores, said J.C., We won seven in a row to win the championship and we're now on our BLAIR WAS as happy as anyone after the victory, We just got into our heads that we were going to state. Scott Tremea commented afterwards, It was a great week of practices. Its great to beat your friends from Roy. Its N. Unfortunatly, the courts appear to have lost sight of their objective and reason for being Technical rules of procedure at times seem to have more importance than the primary responsibility of truth finding and the administration of speedy justice. The purpose of the courts is to serve the people and not the other way around. The two hour lunch must be eliminated. MARTIN Paid political ad by Citizens to Elect Pauline McBride C. McBride Chairman 1 ROYS BIGGEST chance to score came in the final quarter on a first and goal situation on the Falcon's four yard line. Four times Clearfield held and Falcons earned their shutout. It was just a couple plays later that Foulger broke away for a long 90 yard touchdown scamper that was called back on a penalty. He stood for a moment in the end zone dismayed. But just two plays later, Wilson while going back to punt, ifound the entire right side of the field open and raced 75 yards for Clearfield's final TD. I noticed it was open when I was signaling for the ball. I knew I could at least get a first down, said Wilson. N - PAULINE MCBRIDE way here. Kenny Corw in was spectacular on defending kickoff and punt returns. Todd Blair was coming out of nowhere to tackle Roy ballcarriers from his cornerback position and Dean Garrett and Ron Swallow were brilliant in helping to stop Roy twice on fourth down plays. -- S. Mark Johnson (incumbent) VOTE ITS JUST like BLAIR'S running has also been noticeable the past couple of weeks. The senior fullback has ran hard and is picking up plenty of yardage. It gives us good balance w'hen both Todd and Dean are running well. It prevents us from having one of them keyed on all the time. He's a tough little guy," said Hancock. Blair nearly had a punt return go for a touchdown in the third quarter. The 31 yard return did however pave the way for a touchdown that would later be scored by Foulger. A key pass from Wilson to Nye was also a key play in that drive. For Circuit Judge - There may not be any FARMINGTON snow, yet, but its never too early for planning those ski lessons.
