They execute as well as any Davis team I've seen, and I've seen about nine of them ov er the years," he admitted. "They really get off the ball on both offense and defense. We know they have a good running attack but one thing that is overlooked is the fact that their quarterback Rick Secrist is also a fine passer. On defense they are very quick to pursue the football. THE DARTS hoovered over a stingy Woods Cross club for a couple of hours last Friday night but finally went in for the kill, a 21-- 6 victory that solidified a region championship that may be one of the 'most special' in the Darts success ladened years. Just moments after the game it was Ward Sawley, in his fourth successful season here, that made the comments, I dont know where you can go or what you can do to have more pleasant experience than this one. I AS well as my staff, were as emotionally keyed up for this ballgame as any in my coaching career. Ive never seen so much intensity and sweetness in my 17 years of coaching. g Davis burned up the rushing lanes, over 300 yards running in the process. "We usually get Danny Wilson and Craig Cottrell and even some others, but the game was so tight that we pretty well stayed with what we started with. However those kids are super players and they mean a lot to our program, said Sawley. DEFENSIVELY THE Darts were sticklers. In four region games theyve allowed only 15 points. One big reason the Wildcats had trouble Friday night was the heads up play of defensive end, Clain White. Though not real big, White is both quick and strong and accounted for seven unassisted tackles. People are finding out that you cant double team one of our defensive lineman because as soon as you do then weve got a Clain White that is causing damage, Sawley said. THE DARTS were in an enviable position Friday with their Front our again doing a superb job in causing problems with the Wildcat offense. Brian Bock had another sparkling game. As the leading tackier on the team he has had good coordination with the defensive lineman. 1 THE THING that makes this year really special is that we've got players whoyou wouldn't classify as college prospects or even high school football stars, but yet theyve pulled together as well as anv team Ive ever coached and far surpassed the goals I set earlier in the year. "One of our goals was to teach the playoffs. Four teams will be taken and we wanted to be one of those four. But I nevet thought wed be representing this region as the first place club. Theyve far surpassed my expectations, said Sawley. HANSEN, WHO has witnessed his kicker build plenty of confidence over the past few years, knew his range and felt confident as Jeff Moon set it up to toe the winning kick. I knew what hed done in practice and felt he could make it, said Hansen of Petroff who has yet to miss a field goal in 1982. Petroff also had kicks of 32 yards, one at 30 and another at 32. He also added an extra point after Brad Merrills touchdown pass to Rich Gallegos. Keith Duncan Reflex Sports KAYSVILLE - Frank Thompson, who has had much to do w ith the success of Davis High athletics over the past years, has had some 'fun' this fall in leading Dart sophomore football team to one of the finest seasons a first-yeDavis High team has ever had. -- WHAT IS the philosophy? Thompson answered that question as he sat in the coaches lockerroom just minutes after the varstiy team had claimed another league championship. THE PHILOSOPHY, he said, is trying to get these kids ready for what happened tonight. Its great to get them started so that they can have these kinds of experiences." And if this particular sophomore group continues to improve the way they did over the past year, then future years of Dart football look even brighter than they do right now. Highland 48-- 0 and clobbered Bonneville "We really havent had a close game all year, said Thompson, who has now coached this group of kids two years in a row. 42-- they do. The Dart club throws well and the blocking has been sharp as a tack. Thompson, w ho does much of the scouting for the varsity club and has seen plenty of football teams this year, said his sophomores have executed as well or better than some varsity teams. THE KIDS just have a great feel for the game," he said. David Kinard at halfback, may be one of the finest players Davis has had in years according to Thompson. He is the primary running back and also has caught a lot of passes. Playoff Picture Still Out Of Focus Keith Duncan Journal Sports Probably the first goal of any football club in this state is to reach the state playoffs. Winning their region and maybe even a state title might be goals too, but nothing like that comes unless they reach the playoffs first. IT APPEARS at this point, with only one more league game remaining, that Davis High has for sure clinched a playoff berth. Clearfield is in the driver's seat for one and Layton is hanging on with all the strength they can muster. Ironically, Clearfield and Layton meet this Thursday night to help put things in a little better perspective. Davis, after having beaten Woods Cross 6 last Friday evening, has won the league title, at least a share of it. They will meet the Region 3 No. 4 place team some time next week, either Friday or Saturday. If playoffs are needed to decide spots in the tournament, then playoff games will take place Tuesday of next week so the actual tournament can get either or underway Friday Saturday. 21-- COACH CRAIG Hansen of Clearfield, who has coached sophomore football at his school for more than a decade, commented, Davis fielded one of the finest sophomore teams I have ever coached against or seen in my 12 years of coaching." The sophomores at Davis have beat some 52-blanked people bad. They licked East THEY HAVE really matured quickly, said Thompson, Their execution is unbelievable. Sometimes I cant believe the things that IT WAS with less than a minute and a half that the Lancers got possession of the pigskin on their own 20 yard line. Merrill went back to pass but was sacked instead on Laytons first try. My spirits seem to dampen a bit, said Heath, but somehow I still thought we could pull it out. ROBERT Wamke played in place of junior running back Tom Kidd. The coaches were generally pleased with his performance too. Sophomores At Davis Are Highly Tauted physically since I've been here. But despite that, teams like Bonneville, Woods Cross, and Highland still had bigger kids. We are as big or bigger as weve ever been but were not huge by any means. Though it is nice to be big for a change. WHAT IS interesting about this season's playoffs is that the Darts could possibly face Alta again as their first playoff opponent in Rice Stadium. Last year the two teams met with Alta taking a 4 victory. But of course this wont take place unless both win their first 41-1- playoff games at home. If Clearfield or Layton nab either the third or fourth positions in Region One, they'll have the honors of playing Brighton if they finish fourth and Alta if they finish third.
