As the lead singer for Fobia, one of Mexico City’s most popular rock bands, he was used to having hordes of Hispanic fans getting into his Spanish-language music. But whatsnaggedhis attention was the number of enthusiastic non-Hispanic, English-speakingfans, “Even though they didn’t understand the words, they were understanding us more than someof the Latin audience,” he said with a laugh in a telephoneinterview on the eve of a U.S. tour that includes dates in Hollywood, San Jose, San Diego, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Boston, Dallas, Houston and New York. “They were laughing when they were supposed to laugh. They were surprised when they were supposedto be surprised. They kept telling us they were going to get the album and that we shouldsing in English. To play in front of anyone is great, but to play in front of people who don’t speak the language — andthey still get the message — is better.” Andit’s not just a few in-the-know San Diegans getting the message. Along with acts such as Caifanes, Maldita Vecindad, Mana and Cafe Tacuba, Fobia is at the heart of a thriving Mexico-based rock scenethat is starting to be taken seriously by record companies, the rock press and alternative-rock radio programmers in the United States. Supporters range from Porno for Pyros/Lollapalooza mainman Perry Farrell to respected guitarist Adrian Belew, who producedCaifanes’ “E] Silencio” album. “It feels when good when people come up and ask you, ‘Are you Mexicans?’ he said, letting his voice drip with the same disbelief as so many of the questioners. “It feels good that you're demonstrating what's going on with Mexican youth.” Certainly, Fobia’s just-released fourth album — “Amor Chiquito” (BMG Latin) — counts as one of those interesting things. The groupstarted with moreof a synthesizer/new-wave feel. But if U.S. fans need any reference points for where Fobia is now, they might try The Cure, Oingo Boingo, the Pixies, or a bit of Bowie.
