the great basin after she had sculptured the face of each mountain and shaped it for a future usefulness after she had laid each valley with strata of fertile soils brought here from the hills by busy eroding streams after she hall had taken this wonderful aon region safely through its infancy then she went northward and left to man the rearing of her off offspring sprig for him a great task and a noble one in ill her wake remained many widely varying COnditi conditions here a desert broad and brown and hot there a well formed fertile valley beautiful in its make but sadly deficient in that great essential to life water again a valley of like character but more fortunate in that many streams crosscut cross cut its grass greened floor then in places a combination of all these conditions existed and such a valley is the subject of our theme all was well planned in the beginning and ably finished in the end leaving mountains and valleys to shelter clothe and feed the progeny of the little army of men which came later to conquer tile the desert centuries after the departure of mother ther bonneville there camp came across the plains and into the struggling bands of patient suf suffering ferin god fearing fearins I 1 homeless liomel ess people blazing a trail of two thousand miles from civilization liza tion into the heart of th tha western wilderness where dwelt the child left to their care ages ap before just why the they should choose to stop on the shore of tile wonderful inland sea rightly named ly by them great salt lake is a query not to be discussed here at an any rate there they stopped and from a hilltop gazed out upon a vast expanse of salt laden water surrounded by milvi of sage 0 covered land it was a wild sight and not an encouraging one was this the land of their dr dreams eanls this land of apparent waste they hall had been heavily taxed and tried before now and this was no sweet end to their troubles some were tempted to turn back others to go further on and preparations were made for doing so but they lid did in neither cither for suddenly through some unknown power their leaders saw into the future the he sage lias has been removed from the face of tile the land and in its stead were ivere beautiful farmsteads f alyin between and connecting up great cities of much worth and si significance they trev remained and toiled ind and endured and succeeded in ill tile hie face of many stin stinging 0 id 0 failures others followed and some went avent further westward and more came and so it continued today through mans work tile the great basin is even more beautiful perhaps than mother bonneville had hoped for and it grows more beautiful and more wonderful each bear car th wonders or 0 the future are only to be imagined lying laid in the hie heart of one of oc the most fertile portions of the ireat great basin is the famous bear river valley described in tile the foro fore part of this article as being a combination of all of the condi lions left in the wake of the old lake thera is no place in the great basin and even beyond its bounds so wonderful in an agricultural sense no region so filled with opportunities no valley more adapted to the welfare of man than the bear river valley vahey flowing in southward the bear river enters the famed bained box elder county on the north and passing through vast areas of deep rich brown soil it empties itself into tile the northern end of the great salt lake close to the rivers rivers banks and far from them are acres of fruit tree the fruit of which compares with the
