knudson V K t i i A rp V K charles W knudson elsewhere in this issue we say that everyone becomes well ivell to o do in brigham to partially verify this statement we take pride in pointing to such a family as the lie Nn neudon udon brothers whose photographs are presented herewith as also the pictures picture of their comm commodious lious comfortable homes in any community a large family in which every member is successful would be regarded as a rather remarkable one and so we regard the knudson boys as a rather exceptional family here is a set of boys who by dint of energy hard work perseverance self control and business acumen have established themselves in a splendid way in the community men of honor integrity energy and ability men who are in every sense home men loving their wives nivea and children inculcating such virtues as make for manhood and womanhood men who are arc loyal to their friends their home and their country men mell whose lives have been devoted to the development and up building of our community and who are arc in A sense exemplars to us all but lest some fear that we eulogize too highly let us say that these men are not angels by any manner of means they have faults and frankly acknowledge them there is an abundance of modesty distributed among 0 the boys and none seek publicity of any kind say nothing about notoriety tori ety this is absolutely on our on own onn n responsibility and we had bad to work like trojans to get permission to hold the boys up to the limelight we present them to the public because they are highly representative of our community and show what can be accomplished here they have been prime movers in the development of agricultural horticultural and business interests and to say the lie truth we n are re proud of them we have many other good in brigham and lox box elder of whom we are also proud we cannot in one issue of our little paper tell of all the people or of all the things of which we are arc proud but we ive can call make a beginning and that is what we ive are trying to ilo do with these explanations and apolio n ies we ive proceed with our story in ili the year 1834 william Will iain knudson a native of f Deni denmark nark then a young youn man of twenty who had migrated to utah butali two years earlier came to Brig brigham hain city to make ili hi home ab brought with hini him ins his young wife amelia clarup knudson who had emigrated from denmark the previous year mr and mrs knudson made their home in the old fort with a few sturdy pioneers who were rc here they be began bean t an at the bottom rung of the ladder financially speaking 0 and they never climbed very high ii on this ladder as fortunes were no noc made in box elder in those days but they did better they assisted in establishing a foundation fur for nur mir present commonwealth mr knudson was a lover over of nature and lived near her lie ile liked nothing better than tilling the oil but people knew little little then about the adaptability ci oi different kinds kind of soil for various crops and moreover nature seemed more unkind in those days frequently destroying their crops with cold and frost so that dis courage ments were common mr knudson however was persistent and lie he seemed to foresee more clearly than anyone else that file area about brigham was particularly adapted for peaches berries small fruits etc and through his persistence and perseverance lie became successful as have also his children after him mr and mrs knudson had horn born to them in brigham thirteen and three children A brief sketch of each of the surviving boys of the family follows charles W the senior member of the family as well as the senior member of file well known firm of brothers is one of the financial financiers financier of brigham 0 ile he lias has always ailway bad an eye to lr business ile he i one of the men who will find a way or make it UP ile is like the bank that never any detail of his business when lie he was i young man liel ping his father garden and raise fruit they found themselves greatly hampered for want of a market C W then hen went to butte city to open up a market and as a s everyone knows was ivas remarkably successful ile he opened up lip a 1 produce and fruit business there and soon had too much market lie ile could not get stuff fast elou enough h frequently his customers stood about the cars and took look provisions direct from there not permitting them to be moved to liis his place of business E everything very thing 0 brought tiptop prices too here are a few samples ilay hay idilo 40 per ton oats ac per 11 ib butter to lo boc per lb ib potatoes 5 per sack strawberries 5 per 16 cup case each of course expressage pressage cx was high in those lays days but it is readily seen what this splendid market meant to brigham after two years of successful business in blitte lie sold out in order to perform a mission to denmark which lie accomplished in 1883 4 5 after his return he found it advisable to go again to butte where lie continued his former successes for some six or seven years not only did lie he engage in the fruit business but ever had liis his eyes open to other work and did all kinds of contract work and sonic some mining in 1892 lie built the union block in brigham and in the following year returned and opened up the business which he be and his brothers have since carried on here lie ile has been identified with many of the great movements that have brought about brighams Brig hams development and lie he is proud of his city lie ile lias has a splendid family consisting C of six children five of whom are at home bome and the other a dall daughter liter lylia is married to charles C clayton and lives in ill salt lake city miss ethel a recent graduate of the box elder high school gives promise of con Md sid erable talent in both literature and music slie she is the author of file I 1 lie poe poem in ill alli this issue mr knudson has buried four children his wife mrs emily dark clark knudson Km idson lias has proven a valuable helpmeet to her husband and has a sweet charming motherly disposition that makes make home a veritable home in in every sell sense of the word joseph modest lodest pleasant una unassuming kind hospitable benevolent industrious dust rious are arc some of the adjectives that can appropriately be applied to joseph knudson As a boy lie he was very content to stay at home and help his father and as a man it has been the quiet home life that has attracted him most ile he has been essentially a worker and a home builder before lie was married lie he did not spend more than six months month away from home and these few months he spent when a young man mail twenty years of age in getting gettin out timber in lopan logan canyon ilis his pathway in life lias has not been altogether ether smooth and he be lias has met reverses frequently but his indomitable dorni table courage and industry t i i A rp have enabled him to meet life heroically and lie has been what we call eminently successful lie ile I 1 lias 1 as a beautiful home and a ben beautiful u home life his wife josephine carlson carison knudson son po possesses besses in in high degree the lie same virtues that characterize her husband they have five children living and have buried two two of the dau daughters liters are married one to joseph L wight the other to iby rum nun J hanson in ili the spring of 1877 joseph joeph in accordance his fathers wi went over to cache valley and homesteader homesteaded ed near weston here lie he lived for more than fifteen years and became successful as a farmer and stock raiser his heart however was ever with bri brigham liam and her people and when an opportunity came to sell his ranch lie he did so and lie he came back to his native home this was in 1892 in connection with his brother W 0 lie bought the homestead on which he be now lives this at that hat time was a sage brush plain but through ili his s efforts it has been converted into fruitful field and orchard ile he has ten acres of peaches apricots and cherries that compare favorably with the best in brigham 0 joseph lim has never sought any public office and has served in no public capacity except as a s special police officer but has been a staunch defender D der of our great government t and has lived the life of an honest progressive 0 citizen peter what lias has been said with regard 0 to 10 temper character and disposition of joseph knudson may with equal propriety be said of his brother peter these boys in their attitude and manner man ner of life are very much alike both have desired through life to keep in the background of public attention and to pursue the even tenor of their way way unmolested in many respects they are said to re semple closely their father wm knudson chance rather than i disposition lias has thrown peter more than his brother joseph upon public notice for about fifteen years lie he served each autumn nu as mana manager 0 er of the knudson brothers brothels cl club ab at duckbill Duck vill and in this way formed a wide acquaintance with men from all parts of the lie country who are fond of limiting hunting fishing etc for two wo years he served the city a as councilman and he be has also served as school trustee lie he was wag chairman of the board of trustees trustee when the whittier school was ivas built for several years now also lie ba has served in a reli religious capacity as one of the believe would not permit himself to injure in any way a fellow coeina like most others lie he has met misfortunes and reverses ile he has hag also been obliged to meet the grim destroyer who deprived liim him of his beloved wife dinah peterson knudson after she had b borne orne him nine children five boys and four girls after four years of widowhood he married m in 1898 liis his present estimable wife josephine ephine jenson knudson who has borne liim him two children a boy and a girl peters life has been a rather quiet luiet one yet an eventful one for its measure thus tar far spells success the most part lias has worked independently and alone lie ile has tried ili his land at different sorts of labor and in other places notably in in gaelic cache valley and montana but he be has always felt that it was his calling to wrest his living from the soil william 0 the elegant home on the northeast corner of first west and third south streets belongs to the fourth born baril of the knudson boys william 0 the home is only one of many evidences that show wills prosperity when he was a child lie was weak and frail and it is the marvel of many that lie he lived james who was two years younger walked before lie did and it 0 seemed inevitable that if lie he lived at all it would be as an invalid faith tender care courage e and active outdoor life however accomplished the miracle and one would hardly suspect now that lie he had such an inauspicious beginning his early life aside from the gradual overcoming of a 1 frail physique did not differ es essentially senti ally from that of the other boys it was spent quietly on liis his fathers farm his early married life is interesting ile he set sail on the matrimonial sea with a cash capital of thirty five dollars and with the principle firmly established in ill his mind that young people ought a not to go into debt miss alice N larsen was the good mate that set out avith him and the he date of departure was wa s december 17 the weather being cold a good stove was considered the first requisite and this expenditure swallowed up lip six sevenths of their capital thirty dollars this left five dollars for running expenses will and his wife learned early the blessing of doing without their trunk served for a table the ground answered for a bedstead until the new husband liu band could make a better which lie immediately for several years first for four years in idaho and later in partnership with L anderson in colorado and wyoming ile he also went to butte with his brother C W in 1886 and assisted in establishing the
