| Show TREMON TONS as enterprise DURING THE aw HIE PAST YEAR by W H capwell editor tremonton Tre monton times in chronicling chroni cling the doings of a permanent nature in tremonton Tre monton it may bo be well veil for the reader to understand in the beginning that tremonton Tre monton is not nor ever has been a boom town neither has it been fostered by the protecting wing of some great corporation no advertising by syndicates of capitalists has ever been given it everything of consequence has been the result of individual enterprise ter prise and the use of private capital to be sure there are one or two corporations doing business here but they have taken no part in controlling the municipal affairs in any way neither are they file he owners of any part of the ho real estate of the town except such as is absolutely required for the transaction of their own business they neither hold real estate for sale nor for rent as is the custom in some towns prosperity seems to have made itself felt felt during the past year among the business men of the town to a greater extent than ever before better and larger buildings have been erected public enterprises have received greater encouragement and more people have purchased or erected homes for their own use than in previous years among the farming community these improvements are if anything more noticeable ti than in the precincts of the iho village one thing has been accomplished plis lied that will tend more to bring settlers to the place than almost an anything hing else that could have be been n done and that is the installation of a water system for fire protection and culinary use the promotion of this scheme had been the burden of talk and argument 0 for nearly two years on the lie part of those who had the best interests of the community at heart but it was not until last march that it assumed definite form then an election was held to see if the people wanted hydrant water or wished to depend on the wells which they had bad used this his far and the result was as nearly unanimous as it could be and still have opposition the vote being some forty in favor of a water system and one against it then the town board got busy and the result is that the town is supplied with very fair water from the sugar companas comp anys canal about two miles from main street eight inch wooden pipes have been laid from the settling reservoir which is some forty eight feet above the level of the town thus thug giving sufficient fent fall for use in ease case of fire the plant is owned by the town and cost about six thousand dollars since 1903 the year in which tremonton Tre Tren monton lonton was laid out there have not dot been as many buildings erected in any one year as have been built this year then the desire to get something quick in which to do business resulted in ilie hie erection of cheap structures structure z but at present the tendency is to build larger and more convenient buildings which of course cost more but are better adapted to the requirements of the owners and more tasteful in every respect anion among those completed within the past twelve months we might mention a large store building by mr D S lohr two stories in height containing several rooms in the second story which furnish an office for a dentist and living rooms for a family ar sir lohr has also erected two dwelling houses one for his own use and another which is rented to a good tenant at a satisfactory price as an investment burns burge blacksmiths and wagon makers have built a fine shop and fitted it up with a modern modem equipment for the handling of a business which has ha had bad a phenomenal growth W T hudson the owner of the livery barn bam occupied by fife brown made quite extensive improvements in the building last spring and it now is as fine a barn for the purpose as one usually finds in much larger towns the wilson lumber company have erected four neat ineat five room cottages lately two of which are finished and occupied and the others soon will be ready for occupancy S N cole made extensive improvements prove ments in a property which lie bought formerly belonging to E R sherman esq A N fishburn and charles Afa mcclure Clure also have made extensive improvements in their residences by the addition of more rooms veran dag and porches G A woodward bought a cottage of john stahl and remodeled it until the former owner would hardly recognize it at a cost of several hundred dollars wm win E getz and C J dewey have each had a fine cottage erected on first west street one of the prettiest locations in town concrete walks have b been een laid and lawns planted that make them ideal little homes of comfort to their owners W 11 II capwell the publisher of the tremonton Tre monton times has lately completed a fine building on main street as a home for his paper and himself and an office for uncle sams mail sir capwell being also postmaster in connection with his other duties this building is well calculated for the purpose for which it was erected the rooms are of good size and it can be truthfully said that tremonton Tre monton has one of the best postoffice post office buildings of any town of its size in the state one other public improvement which should not be forgotten is the addition to the large brick school building which was erected last fall at a cost of something over four thousand dollars two large rooms and a hallway were added giving it almost or quite double the seating capacity of the original building A modern modem heating beating and ventilating plant was also installed making it one of the best school buildings in box elder county among other buildings under way is the home of henry seeger of which ch the basement is completed and occupied A temporary roof has been placed over it until the owner sells his apple crop when lie he hopes to have money enough to complete and furnish it then there is the cider factory being built by one of our german citizens mr matthew baer this is a very large building with a concrete basement some twelve feet high in which the product of the factory will be stored lt it is the intention of the owner to make cider vinegar jellies and other fruit products mr baer idaer was educated in an agricultural school in germany and has carefully studied the manufacture of these articles and will undoubtedly make a success of the business which is quite new to this part of the country but well developed and very profitable in the east and in europe another industry that was projected some time ago but not fully completed until lately is the drain tile factory of john sommer just west of town this industry is one of those whose pro duets are a necessity in this irrigated country and a soon as the proprietor can turn out the work in sufficient quantities there will be no end to the demand at least not for many years to come there are a number of fine farm houses and barns being constructed ted at the present time but our space forbids mentioning all of them thomas carter built a very large and convenient farm house on the garland road last year and now his brother george carter is building another on the opposite side of the street quite a number of people from the lie fruit regions of colorado have come into this part of the valley lately and most of them who have not already done so are making arrangements to secure some orchard land and set out trees the coming coining spring they all say that our trees appear more vigorous and healthy than the trees in colo rado and with the loads of app apples les they bear this year they see no reason why the of the bear river valley should take a back seat any longer this from people who have lived for years in the best fruit districts of our neighboring state gives an impetus to land values and they are likely to go soaring before many years in fact prices of good orchard land have nearly dearly doubled in the past three years and still they are not nearly so hi high h as in idalio idaho and oregon and other northwestern states A word might be said about the great drainage canal of the iowa drainage district this canal which is several miles long has just been completed at a cost of some six thousand dollars it carries the seepage water from several hundred acres of land into the malad river by this means land that hat was wa s likely to become filled with alkali is drained of its surplus water and in time will be among the he best in the valley this improvement made imade by men who came here with very little money only nine or ten years ago shows what energy and work will accomplish com when the whole community pulls together for a certain end tins this sketch might be enlarged indefinitely but probably sufficient is here given to convince the reader that the people of tremon ton and vicinity are alive and have faith in their towi and the whole bear river valley in general as one of the best if not the ne plus ultra of valleys in the united states |
