Show 199437 Energy Edition, January, Price company marketing unique coal fuel source A local company looking the future of the steel industry for a growing need for the potential of its fuel to source, may soon provide several new jobs to the area. Environmental Technolo- gies Group (ETG) of Price, Techformerly Enviro-Fuel- s has developed a nology Inc., unique process to produce coal relatively high-valu- e and coke briquettes from coal fines from mines (coal h in bits less than coke breeze and diameter) which is recycled from the blast furnaces of the steel mills. Russ Madsen, director of the Price production plant, said the company collects what used to come out of smoke stacks, combines it with other materials to form a coke briquette which can be introduced into the furnace to melt into steel. ETG said in a press release that the briquette is composed of waste flue dust and blast furnace sludge, which are both byproducts g of the process. ETG also said one steel plant can trap 250,000 tons of dust a year, which poses it with the problem of having to spend millions of dollars on landfills to dispose of the waste. Geneva Steel, a plant in Utah County, worked in cooperation with ETG at an plant to do testing on coke briquettes. The first test on the promising new technology took place at Geneva in late August with encouraging results. This bum proves feasibility of recycling waste flue .25-inc- steel-makin- on-si- te dust and blast furnace sludge through briquet- ting, said ETG research and development director George Ford. He said the briquettes, combined with coke were reintroduced into an oxygen furnace where they were converted into steel during the oxygen cycle. He said there was no discemable detriment to the finished product with pour-of- f metal meeting all of the specifications required for steel. Madsen said the plant in Price started as a laboratory facility in January 1991 and a year later, was a continuous production operation. He said the local mines in Carbon and Emery counties were instrumental in help ing ETG get started. If it had not been for the support of local vendors and the local mining houses, wed never have gotten here, he said. Madsen said the company presently employs 16 fulltime workers who run two shifts daily at the plant. Madsen said the company is presently undergoing tremendous expansion in its sales through increased advertising in radio, newspapers and television. ETG has a larger sales force working along with a profes- sional advertising agency to get the word out about the g alternative fuel for stoves. ETGs Clean Coal briquettes are currently being marketed for use in wood stoves, fireplaces and campfires. ETG is distributing the briquettes to stores along the Wasatch Front and locally at City Market and Kilfcyle Krafts. They are also being distributed to convenience stores from Salt Lake to St. George and wood-burnin- An Environmental Technologies in states surrounding Utah, He said the potential for &nihlouee& Sfob Prevention and True Health Care is employee monitors the process at briquette-makin- g the Price plant. at CARBON CHIROPRACTIC CENTER where we care and are here for you b a jYalmal CALL TODAY 637-045- 0 39 No. 600 E.
