That, says Bureau of Land Management (BLM) planner Mike ODonnell, is the overriding goal of the newly formed Canyon Country a coalition of Partnership local govand state federal, .1 4S ernments, businesses, interest groups and private citizens dedicated to the proper management of southeastern Utahs canyon country. On Thursday, Jan. 27, the consensus building group will have its first opportunity to put the goal into practice. The first public meeting of the partnership is scheduled at the Moab Valley Inn, 711 South Main, from 10 a.m. to 3 -- i1 (T" i X J i y x- k - p.m. i Meeting agenda items indicate that the partnership is ready to tackle some of the more difficult recreation-relate- d issues confronting the region. Topics for the meeting include the backcountry management plan for Canyon-land- s National Park, how to deal with the regional impacts resulting from the crush of tourists and recreation users and how private helicopter companies and government land management agencies can work out their differences regarding scenic overflights. The public will also be given the opportunity to present issues they feel need to be collectively addressed by this group. Its a great opportunity for anyone to provide input and hopefully join in as a partner in the resolution of an issue, said ODonnell. ODonnell, who works in the BLMs Moab District, is just one of several public employees and private citizens who have been working behind the scenes for nearly a year to pull Canyon Country Partnership together. Everyone now pretty much agrees that the old approach to solving prob-- : lems just doesnt cut it anymore. If were going to sustain both the uses and beauty of the Colorado Plateau, we have to look at the big picture the region as a whole, said ODonnell.
