Show f 199429 Energy Edition, January, I Helper museum shows The Western Mining and Railroad Museum located in Helper is a historical museum that tells the story of the to immigrants who came the Western United States to work in the mines and on the railroads. It tells the story of their ethnic diversity, the different customs, languages, foods, dances, music they brought from Europe with them and how it influenced life in America. It tells of their family life and work ethic in the mines and on the railroad. It is a story of hard work, hunger, struggle, illness, injuries, mine disasters, ; widows and children, strikes and organizing the display at the Helper Western Mining and Railroad Museum illustrates how early miners monitored gas levels inside the mines. Many displays at the museum give examples of the cultural diversity and ethnic origins of many of this areas early settlers. Approximately 8,000 tourists visit the museum annually, making it one of the larger attractions in Carbon County. A unions. Plans for the coming tourist season are to have a Blacksmith shop finished in the basement, a ghost town room with pictures of all the old mining camps in Carbon County (eventually to be extended to Utah ghost towns), a map room containing old maps of Carbon County coal mines. The museum is planning a display showing the history of the post offices and the organization of the United Mine Workers of America. The museum is planning to take a program into the schools to encourage teachers to bring classes to the museum. Children would have the opportunity to learn about the areas rich heritage. The museum has received significant support from the senior citizens in the community, who have volunteered during the tourist season to welcome and inform visitors to the museum. We have also had wonderful summer help from Carbon High School Sterling Scholar students. They work in the gift shop and help out on the computer," a museum said spokesperson.
