Show 14 Energy Edition, January, 1994 Folklore portrayal inaccurate American folklore has often portrayed the coal miner as a rather one dimensional worker usually strong in body, weak in mind and living a life of poverty. Most members of the modern coal work force would find this portrayal of their profession and lifestyle puzzling at best, and insulting at worst. Coal industry workers are a diverse group that includes not only people who mine coal, but a variety of other highly skilled occupations. Contrary to popular pers of all ception, coal miners have a high school or better education. They earn an average of $38,000 annually in salary and many make considerably more when overtime and production bonuses are figured in. Most are covered by extensive health, insurance and pension benefits.
