Show SUNDAY SERVICES dr woodward on manual schools bishop Whit Whitney whitneys 8 testimony religious services were held in the tabernacle salt lake city sunday july 8 1888 commencing at 2 p m mi apostle reber J grant presiding the choir and congregation sant sanga 0 any what is ie truth tia the fairest gem that the riches of worlds can produce craper was offered by apostle john henry smith the choir sang sane the hymn behold the mount of olives rend I 1 and on its top bles messiah siah stand the priesthood of the ninth ward officiated in the administration of the t apostle Apost ll J grant announced that prof C M woodward woods r of the me wash ington university s st t louis was present and by request would speak on the subject of manual education I 1 PROF WOODWARD remar remarked lied that in a place where the desert was made to blossom blosom agthe as the rose it was unnecessary to tb speak of tile the advance in scientific knowlt knowledge dge but he would inquire what was necessary tp qualify the young men of this age tor for the work before them the introduction of practical science among the people has made many material changes and revolutionized the methods of communication agri ft iture 1 and every department of life gi a alf lf the occupations now engaged in ere a century ago yet how bow little of this progress has entered into the public schools which are largely conducted as faey were a century since la ia my own experience tour four fifths ot of my collegiate education had no BO relation to the work la in which I 1 am now engaged the boy when be comes from school should have a practical knowledge of something that will make him of benefit to his fellow men through the ages past education was not for those who dia the work in the world but was more for the life of a gentleman a soldier a clergyman a lawyer or a physician the man who tilled the soil and brought from the metals those articles that were useful was considered bayona the pale ot ol education this same idea largely enters into our school system for fourteen years I 1 have been engaged with many others in ia trying to bridge over this chasm and to introduce ele ments that will enable a young man to step from the school prepared to do something I 1 have been engaged in trying to supply something toile to the old school and add something of a practical nature to the former cormer system we want men mot inot only with trained mindi but skilled hands it if a man has but one kind of training he is necessarily one sided and I 1 could bould not trust his bis judgment if he has both kinds of training lie is as a r result level headed the germans have made a good step in establishing the kindergarten they take the child from its mothers arms and start it in a practical and intellectual school but when the child reaches seven or eight years of age it is turned over to tze ane old school it should have been continued continue a on the kindergarten plan from the foundation up it has been my lot to train young men between fourteen and eighteen years af age to make the most of the themselves m ito to train the whole boy and not half of him mpr upon properly trained boys rests the welfare of tile the republic A manual training school is a part art of the university at st louis ant and it is the oldest in ia the country there the boys come at about fourteen prepared for a hi high h school course of three years first there is a course of mathematics then a course of science third literature fourth comes drawing and fifth instruction in the us use e of tools all these go through the entire three years course to the fifth department two hours of tile the six per day are given during the first year the classes are taught the ike use of tools in connection with wood the teacher shows them how to construct the piece ol of work set sat for them for the day W to their thorough understanding then each to is required to make the article as directed and under the personal supervision of a competent instructor all alf of et the boys relish the and are deeply interested therein step by step the are taken up op the ladder 0 of woodwork principle not using up a lot of material the method of use aad the theory of every tool is carefully taught and the tools must be kept in good condition each caring for those he be alone uses the second year the boys are taught some of the mysteries of metal work and learn the whole theory of shaping and iron and steel the instruction given is most thorough and under the direction of a skillful teacher during the third year the boys learn the methods of operating upon iron steel brass and eoal in every way in which they can be manipulated and must work with the utmost precision and accuracy every day five days in the week is this systematic work going on and in that way are the principles a of learned though no boy has been taught a trade but every one is required to construct some useful article or machine before he be graduates we try to make the boys understand what they are doing and why they do it the result of this training is that boys at seventeen so go from the school with an ambition to step forward in the line of education those who go to work are easily able to find employment because they know what they want to do they can choose as an occupation having a practical idea of that they are best adapted to another good thing thine is that they are not afraid of work they are also ietter better enabled to occupy the position they are best suited to by nature and training and they do not develop as men in the wrong place we have found that we better than we knew the zeal for wo work rk keeps them at school to the end of t he course a much larger proportion stay through than with the old system because there is something to interest them in addition to the memorizing process and because they see a practical tie at result of their stu Oies it if this system ot I 1 manual training were put into the III high 9 li schools it would cause a boom I 1 for the schools it is more expensive than the old system but it is worth all it costs and more too tob it creates a respect 4 bif for or skilled labor it if produces intelligent labor which cow commands respect it makes the boys men because it gives them a keenness of intellect and a judgment that does not develop without a practical education it cultivates close observation and makes the students intellectually honest they are required to be truthful in their deeds in their workmanship mau ship and this makes them truthful in ia words the system dyste in of manual education trains the head the heart and the band there is a fallacious idea that a manual sebo school olisa is a manual labor SC school hool where a boy can earn his own liv living 1119 i while getting an education this is a mistake tor for there Ss Is no bimi similarity larity in III the manual lator labor school the fact that the boy has to earn his own living 56 deprives it of the intellectual aral training ining that is given irk in the manual school nor is the latter an industrial school which is to teach boys trades good enough in its way but it does not reach the manual school or in fact resemble it in any respect I 1 think the manual school superior in every way we do not make trade tradesmen we make men that are better qualified for or first class tradesmen than any others cau be without the instruction we give some say we should make something in our schools and sell it this is the most serious obstacle le in the way of a successful school and cannot bo be practiced we train boys to use tools and when they learn the school is not transformed into a factory but the student goes on to something else the only article we put on oa th the market is goodwell trained boys I 1 am earnest in behalf of the boys that they have the best education the country af affords afforde and I 1 urge you to give them a chance test the qualities of the manual school in your midst if you would make your bos strong honest clearheaded self reliant give them a training that strengthens bliem them clear round ra und teach them to look things square in tile the face and to know how domeet them I 1 remember aa instance of an illinois farmer who sent his bis son to our manual school for the firsa year wh when en the boy got nack to the farm he was the best man on it ile he could keep the machinery in good order be cause he understood us its mechanism and the result of his successful training was that the next year the farmer seat sent another son to our school and next nest year the third came I 1 wish I 1 could make you feel the importance of this movement for I 1 think we are doing the best we can for our children when we best prepare them for their work in the world I 1 BISHOP 0 P F WHITNEY was the next speaker he said dr woodward is surnamed the ap apostle astle of manual training it if I 1 were asked to express an opinion as to the gospel he preaches I 1 would say it is the gospel of common sense there can be no mo t two opinions a as to the wisdom and city of his principles he says he stumbled upon his mission by accident there we might differ fr from om him for we believe in an overruling providence in all things it is the view of the latter day saints that wherever intelligence lass asserts erts itself or an effort is put forth for the amelioration of ithe condition of mankind it is due to the inspiration of almighty god I 1 love dr woodwards teachings because they reach the ithe bedrock of common sense they teach the nob nobility litty of labor and remind us that the vocation of our first parents adam and eve was not a disgrace I 1 read in such teachings the death doom of folly and nonsense I 1 believe in the rearing of boys and girls to look at life earnestly it is no n joke no day dream a solemn reality on imy ath I 1 listened to an eloquent oration b by y judge benson a gentleman who h has lately come into our midst who casid said that when the american b boy oy became ashamed of honest labor the days of this republic would be numbered I 1 believe that thai Godde god desiring string to perpetuate the principles upon which this government rests is making an effort to stem the tide that tends to effeminacy and destruction all that is wise and last just and true has come to sta stay yand and god will raise up men to institute reforms as fast as they are needed in ia ev every department part ment of human effort and intelligence he will contil continue lue to inspire men to teach practical truths to mankind lor their salvation we are all the eh children ildren of god spiritually and temporally the lat ter day saints believe god angels and men to be of the same order orde r and species in different degrees of develop ment all the difference between god and man is due to education when a human being is debek ped to the ful ness of his blis possibilities he is qualified for the presence of god and the society of angels this is what it is to be saved and exalted education is therefore the ladder to heaven but we most be fully educated developed to the ot of the stature of a inan or woman in christ jesu I 1 would not advocate under existing conditions the introduction of religious instruction into our oar district schools and universities we favor avor the establishment of schools where the gospel may be taught where the spiritual as well as ais the temporal nature may be trained and developed but religion ioa could not be introduced into the common schools under existing circumstances when there are so many differences in religion and schools are supported by general taxation but I 1 hope to see the time when the world will be united when all will believe inthe same god and au all believe alike then I 1 hope to see the gospel of jesus christ taught in our Ech schools as well as art science etc for man is a dual being and both parts of him ought to be educated to use the professors worde word we cannot trust the J judgment of the man who is only half or partly educated weare we are hastening toward another r life tor for which we ought to prepare f for or if culture and d training are necessary for this life wity why not also necessary to enable us to grapple with the great issues of the life to aeme jesus christ the great teacher laid down his life to introduce that knowledge which is the spiritual education we require I 1 the gospel of christ chrast is the ladder of intelligence that leads to the glory of the gods the choir sang the anthem the earth cart lils is the lor lords ds benediction by apostle heber J grant |
