exciting a contest as any in the city for the election of two trustees one for the regular term of thrive three years the other for the term of two years made necessary by the removal of one trustee from the district distri t the liberals carried the election last year it will be remembered that in this district are four of the great hotels and last night each furnished its platoon of transients to swell the liberal ranks ten minutes before the time they began filing in so that when the meeting was called calle d to order the vote stood 70 to 51 in favor of the liberal nominee tor for chairman col merritt Merri lt he made a short speech about education being the basis of republican institutions and beffie he was fairly seated it was moved and seconded by half a dozen liberals that the balloting begin at once ances so 0 inconsiderate was the haste to capture the polls it was suggested by a cooler head that a secretary might be elected first and accordingly fred corker liberal was chosen by acclamation cla mation mr harrington offered an amendment to the motion to proceed with the election that the meeting hear the report odthe of the trustees speeches followed pro and con but the crowd gradually worked itself back into a state of goo good d natu nature re again before the business of the meeting was completed the excitement was caused by bys a dispute as to the time W when hen the meeting should be called to order the chairman of the board of trustees called for order at but members of the liberal party vehemently protested that the proper time was 8 co clock it appears to have been abden a general understanding among them that the meeting would not begia before 8 but the official notice posted by the trustees specified A copy of this notice was produced and had the effect of convincing most of the objectors that they had been mistaken though some of them felt sore over the matter throughout the meeting lae eting T C 0 armstrong was nominated by the liberals and joseph E R morgan by the peoples party to succeed rita himself some growling more bantering and a good deal of chaff were indulged in while the balloting was progressing the crowd being tor for the most part good humored when the last mun man in the line of voters had cast his bis ballot some one moved that the polls be declared closed this was at about A liberal moved that they close at 9 A peoples party man moved that they be declared closed in flye five minutes another liberal moved that the time be made contusion confusion and discussion attended the making of these motions being finally fixed upon it was nearly that hour before quiet was restored and a number of liberals came in and voted in the meantime for some minutes before the be polls were declared closed no votes were cast I 1 the count disclosed that 73 ballots ballote had bad bees been cut cast for mr armstrong and for mr morgan the latter was declared elected the trustees report was read and accepted and the meeting was dismissed in good order in this district the contest was very close last year the peoples party having a majority of only abo ut eight votes SIXTEENTH DISTRICT the meeting
