| Show interesting experience of a missionary to great lEtri britain tain EDINBURGH scotland dune june 1888 E editor deseret news I 1 take this opportunity opportunity of giving you and friends a I 1 little atle account of my travels since I 1 left my mountain home and of how bow the work of god is progressing in these nations I 1 left salt lake on the morning of the ath of april 1888 in company with brother E L sloan and brother cottrell wilo met us at farmington Farming ten our au journey was a very pleasant one with only one little mishap by which we lost our first class seats and had to share with the biggers nig gers we thought we should change cars at chattanooga and when we arrived at that place we shouldered our and made for the platform we were no sooner out of our seats when they were immediately filled and when we found a conductor we inquired for the desired train but found to our chagrin that the one we mad had left was the one we were seeking there was nothing for it but bilt to take the best seats we could we did making a good deal of tun fan over the matter everything went smoothly till we came to Norfolk where we took the old dominion steamship com banys boat lor for new york it is a very pleasent pleass nt sail from these two ports and one that can be enjoyed without an attack of that stomach raiser that some people call seasick sea sick ness I 1 here made the acquaintance of a new york doctor with whom I 1 had a long conversation on mormonism and who strongly denounced the government for the unwarranted confiscations of the property of the saints he seemed to be famil familiar TJ ar with the acts of congress in regard to our oar people and pronounced them unconstitutional he waslof a thoroughly cack catholic alic plic spirit though a methodist and was very high highly JW pleased with a copy of the book of mormon which I 1 gave him we ARRIVED AT NEW YORK CITY on sunday night but remained on board till morn morning ug when we awoke it was raining fast but we took our I 1 valises and boarded a tramcar tram car and I 1 proceeded to smith mcneils As all the places of interest in and around new york city have been portrayed to your readers I 1 will only mention that we visited aad walked over the brooklyn bridge had bad an hours ride through glenwood enwood GI cemetery had a look through the zoological gardens in central park and visited nibles theatre TAe atre we wen to the stock exchange and had bad a fine view over the hudson river new york brooklyn sud and jersey cities from the top of the produce exchange these were the principal places we visited we remained in new york until wednesday when we took thi the otty city of rome borne ot of the anchor line for liverpool VOYAGE was one I 1 shall never forget it if doing without food for several days has anything to do with imoe impressing i ing ti on ones memory we e were sick from the day after sailing until we saw the shores of quid ireland looming up on the afternoon of wednesday april 25 1888 we then came into smooth water and that great ship was no longer tossed up and down to the tune of a sick head and an empty stomach but it commenced to glide through the water like a bird through the air while every heart was glad and everyone rejoiced to see land once more even it it was only the barren beach of the emerald isle the next day we were safely landed in liverpool and were received by the brethren there in a very kindly manner we remained at the office most of the afternoon talking of home and of the mission that was before us in the evening I 1 went to visit a brother of mine who was living in liverpool but judge of his bis surprise when he saw who his bis caller was it was LIKE AN ELECTRIC SHOCK to him for foi I 1 verily believe he never expected to see me again I 1 had bad not notified him of my arrival hence his bis surprise he immediately i wrote home and aaa told my parents that I 1 had bad unexpectedly arrived in liverpool a abd d would be over in a day or two the surprise of my parents was even greater I 1 for they were strongly convinced that out of the strongholds strong holds of the cormons mormons Mor mons it was impossible to get and father even said to me he never expected to see me again such if is the notion in the world regarding the latter day saints but I 1 was to nave have a surprise myself when I 1 came to belfast it was circulated amongst those who knew me previous to my going to utah that the MORMONS AD DRIVEN ME from their territory and church because I 1 refused to marry a young woman that the church demanded 1 should marry I 1 did not know what to think of this story or where it originated I 1 could not tell but my a appearing arin amongst my friends astren strengthened ened and confirmed in my belief elle in regard recard to the divinity of mormonism and bearing my per bonal testimony thereto drove this base lie ile from the minds of those who credited it and gave them another proof of the baseness of the fabrications penned against the mormons cormons Mor mons the saints in belfast were pleased to see me once more and hear my tes in regard to the truth aud and get an account from one ene of their their own countrymen of utah and its people eople I 1 remained there amongst my friends friends for two weeks then I 1 came to glasgow to attend the district meeting here I 1 met friends of some of the saints in salt lake city who treated me ver very y kindly and were pleased to bear about the w welfare eliare of their brethren in zion I 1 was sent from glasgow to labor IN EDINBURGH with brother S T whitaker of ogden the mission in this city is not very encouraging at present there are only five or six saints saint in this branch and the people generally seem steeled against the trutha truth through the lies that have been sent broadcast by the press and the pulpit U it the time tim e has hasp gone one by seem ingry n gf y when the cormons mormons Mor mons will be me met t with plain scriptural arguments an and d we have now to ovar overturn turn or refute the stories and lies that are in every ones mouth we were met melon on sunday last by a gentleman who came to our open air meeting tor for the purpose of tearing our doctrines to pieces but he be was so whipped by his bis own lash that he be trembled like a frightened child but no sooner was this perceived by his companion than lie he stepped into the ring with a book and aad commenced reading a lot of lies accepted by the crowd but he be was made to quiver also to such an extent that it surprised us in this book was contained the testimony of the witnesses to the book of mormon and we pressed hard bard upon him and made him read it he finally read it in connect connection tion with some evidence in regard to the coming forth of the book of mormon and trembled in doing so we can do nothing against the truth but for it I 1 may conclude by adding MY TESTIMONY that prophets do exist at this resent present day for for many of their prophecies prophecies have been fulfilled in myself it was waa acied I 1 should rea reach h the land 0 of f zion I 1 did so it was prophesied I 1 should return to my native land and the lord has preserved my life from the hand of the destroyer and I 1 have done so I 1 may relate that I 1 was sleeping in the railway carriage at lynchburg virginia a man at the depot learning that mormons cormons Mor mons were in the cars came in brandishing a revolver and wanting to rid the earth of us in connection with all other mor imer mons mono but the servants of the lord had bad promised we should reach our destination in peace and we did so and not a hair of our heads was harmed the work of the lord will progress Tess no matter how much the devil may rage or his agents may oppose praying for the welfare of the saints and the establishment of truth and righteousness in the earth earth I 1 remain your brother in the covenant J HAYES |
