The Western Gynecological and Obstetrical Clinic Inc., which is staffed by five s. is contracted by pharmaceutical companies to conduct tests on new drugs and clinic patients do the testing. Dr. Howard G. McQuarrie, doc-toi- o principal investigator, explained that human drue in- vestigation is done in phases. Phase one is done for safety. Phase two uses a reistricted population to test the investigational efficiency, drugs chronic toxicity and "usefulness in humans. The Clinic conducts these tests on men and women at the Utah and Nevada State prisons. Prisoners volunteer and are paid for this testing. Phase three is a large scale clinical study and this is where Salt Lake area women a participate. FDA Approval The Clinic, whose reseaich activities require approval of the Federal Drug Administration. has offices in Salt Lake City and Murray. Each office has a research staff. Mrs. Ruth Cundick is to charge of the Salt Lake office, Mrs. Gloria Painter the Murray office and Mrs. Eileen Brooks is overall director. One hundred women are on a test unit, 50 from the Salt Lake office and 50 from the Murray office.
