Show lake Tribune, D 7 Sunday, October 10, 1971 The Salt Eagles Boss Says Clul) Looks Good By Grant V. Mes&erlv Tribune Sports Wntei Every thing looks good. The players, the coach, just everything. I really belie; e that this is the year that the Golden Eagles will be right in the midtile of the Western Hockey League playoffs Speaking was Dan Meyer, the indefatigable owner of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles hockey club. And hp w as bubbling v ith more than his usual amount of natural enthusiasm. I know I said the same thing last year, said Meyer, almost apologizing for his team's last place finish last season. But at the time I ieally believed it was possible. And as a matter of fact, Im still convinced it could have been possible. But several factors entered in that kept us from winning. V i o t 7 t a "W -- AfA ' Y' V A, it . 1 . ''-- I ; Veteran Team But this year, Meyer said with a srrrle, we have a winning combination. Well have veteran team with many former NHL players, and a coach that really knows his stuff. Meyer was speaking of coach-generA1 manager Rollins, a burly former NHL goal tender who moved to Salt Lake City after a very successful career with the Spokane Jets. Already Rollins has earned the respect of players and coaching personnel. Punch Imlach, the coach of the Buffalo Sabers, was so impressed with Rollins that he just let him run the action on the ice during the training camp, Meyer said. Punch would just sit in the stands where he could get a different piospective on what was a - ' - - Vr u i going on. A1 knows the game inside out, and he knows how to handle his people. I think we to have a very cohe-Mv- e team that will give a hundred percent, Meyer said. The Golden Eagles will still have their working agteement Buffalo with tins season, Meyer noted, but Salt Lake w ill not be a development team for the NHL club as it was last year. The development dub Matus forced Salt Lake City to carry eight rookies on the roster all season. And at times the youngsters didnt have the experience to compete against the NHL veterans. This year Ihere will be two or three rookies on the club. Top Talent Theie will be some familiar taces returning to the Salt Palace in Golden Eagle uniforms, of course, and these the will form veterans nticleaus of the squad. e Guyle Fielder, the NHL scoring leader has been hav ing one of his best training sessions in years, and is expected to be leady lo spark the scoring drives. Jerry Mazur, a crowd fapleaser who has become a Golden of fans, Eagle vorite will be back, as will Ted Hodgson, who is getting back Ins old tom h after a slump duiing the lattei pad of last year. Team captain Bob Ellett will return, and high scoring Dennis Kassian will be hoping to improve on last years goal total. He scoied 35 last yeai, which placed him seven'h in the NHL. and established a Golden Eagle tecord. Joe Robeitson will also be back. .. Ready Jake Rathwell, the NFL Rookie of the Year will bo back in a Salt Lake umfoin., B.lly Ingli. who up lieatcd m a couple of games 'ast year for Salt Lake, will Eagle. And lie a is Rathwell ready for anJake other season with Hie Eagles. 'Two defensemen who wee impiilar with Ihe Slt Lake Ians last year were Paul Ter-belie and Francois Laximh. Both will be hack. Also, goalie Dbn Wallis b still with Ihe chib, though lies battling for a spot with Jim Aimstiong who was with Salt Lake two while full-tim- e years ago. ar Ainv-tion- look List g otf.
