Cons oiidated Aluminum announced Corp (Conalco) it was shifting Wednesday fom a published to a market price for ingot. The indications of this move were that the market for aluminum would continue to determine the level of prices in the said American Metal Market, daily newspaper of the metal industry. Sources in the aluminum Industry made the point that industry, the most important factor facing users of metal is the price situation in semifabncated and fabricated aluminum products. Most of the major U.S. producers are heavily intethat is they use grated most of the ingot they produce in their own mill products. Thus, it is the price situation in the latter products that is vital to buyers as well as producers. Ingot has become primarily a cost factor, like bauxite, rather than a market com- modity. In the European aluminum industry, however, there is still a marked 'division between irjot producers and those making semifabricated out of purchased products ingot. Much of the ingot sold to into goes dependents extrudes, who also use scrap, the newspaper continued. There is no one price for that metal and trade sources said price quoted by Conalco was in the ballpark. Tney noted the puce was essentially a stated price rather than a price cut. Conalco, which is jointly owned by Phelps Dodge Corp , a major copper producer, and Swiss Aluminum Ltd. (Alusuisse), a worldwide aluminum producer, stated the price at 23 cents a pound. The last price for aluminum was 29 cents a pound, but the newspaper said there has been substantial discounting from that price.
