Instructors for the coming session of the Deseret News Ski School met with directors Alf Engen and Mary Jo Reiter on the green slopes of the campus with ski gear attached. h for The class was a instructors, to make sure those students attending the first session Saturday at Sugar House Park will get the very most. The class in the park will be a first in the 27 years the Deseret News Ski School has been teaching skiers. Sometimes new skiers have trouble trying to cope with both new equipment and the slippery snows. This will solve the problem. Covered in the first session will be both an introduction to equipment and to skiing. From the park, skiers will move to three Saturday sessions on the famed slopes of Alta in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Because of the unique qualities of the Alta resort, the remaining classes will be run on its slopes. While, such things may sound easy, to the beginner with the three to five foot extensions under foot, it's not the slightest bit easy. From these movements, they covered such things as circling to the left and right, walking over variations in terrain, herringbone walking (a method of walking forward uphill), side stepping, diagonal climbing on both sides and falling and getting up from level. Aside from a few new colors and an added buckle here and there, boots and bindings carry no dramatic changes. On the ski front, though, there's all kinds of new additions and modifications. All of which seem to be heading towards consistency and coordination. Some ski makers have gone back, some have taken a new step forward.
