Women who made history Lucretia Mott: gentle reformer Lucretia Mott encountered her first of discrimination against Millen at the age of 15. She was hired as an assistant and teacher at a boarding school near Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Because she was a of what f woman, her salary was the male teachers were receiving. her interest in women's rights began at that point. It was an interest that would carry her into the forefront of the movement and into a distinguished position in American history. She made her debut into public life at an early age. "At twenty-fivyears Of age." she wrote, "surrounded by my little farnilY and many cares. I felt called to a more Anti-Slaver- y one-hal- Anti-Slaver- y Stady Canton got together. You might try adjusting your pillow or head rest higher or lower to see if such a change helps. Another cause is related to food, particularly to that containing the amino acid tyramine. This is present in cheese, certain beans, wine and beer. If you snack on cheese or nip before bedtime or before your nap this could cause your discomfort. I recall one case of a woman who had such headaches. I found out she was in the habit of covering her head with a blanket or sheet during sleep. She was breathing stale air. Good ventilation during sleep is important. DEAR DR., THOSTESON: I read somewhere that licorice is good for diets. Do you recommend it? E.L. ANSWER: Licorice has no role in dieting. Excessive amounts can upset the blood chemistry and cause elevated blood pressure. It seems that a certain chemical in licorice is converted by the body into another offending chemical. This latter chemical causes a sodium retention, which raises the blood pressure. An occasional licorice stick causes no harm. I hope your letter does not presage a new fad diet that features licorice gorging. DEAR DR. THOSTESON: I hope you will be kind enough to help me. I am 68 years old and I am losing weight. I weight 109 pounds and I have been in the hospital for tests. The doctors said I have too much iron in my blood, so I have to go to have a pint of blood removed each week. The reason I went to the doctor in the first place was because I have such a nasty taste in my mouth, like iron, and I can't take food. After losing six pints of blood I still have the nasty taste. I don't know what to do MRS. A.P. ANSWER: Your only course of action is to continue with this program. And it will take more than six venesection visits before any effect will be noted. You probably lost weight because food became distasteful to you. Such taste phenomena are common in problems such as yours. Try to eat high caloric meals. They need not be large ones.' DEAR DR. THOSTESON: I am 69, and I awaken every morning with a vicious headache. I nap each day after lunch feeling fine. On waking an hour later I have the same kind of headache. Can you E.B.G. explain this? ANSWER: One cause of morning headache is high blood pressure. It is not too common, but it should be looked into nevertheless. The first women's rights conference was held in Seneca Falls, N.Y., in 1848 under the direction of the two women and marked the formal beginning of the women's rights movement in America. Lucretia was an eloquent and effectivc speaker who was enlisted in other reform movements. The temperance reform early enand the cause gaged my attention of peace had a share of my efforts," she wrote. In fact, throughout her life, Lucretia Mott, the gentle Quaker reformer -wrought quietly but mightily for God and humanity." Carma Wadley public hie devotion to duty." Lucretia became a minister in the Ilicksite Quaker group. She also began to work for the abolitionist cause. "My sympathy was early enlisted for the poor slaves," she recalled. In 1833 she helped form the Society of Philadtlphia, and after the fugitive slave law was passed her home became a sanctuary for runaway slaves. In 1840 Lucretia Mott (17934880) was sent to London as a delegate to the Convention.
