Brigham City, Utah Thursday, October 16, 1975 20 BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Lucin Portage Pennings Mom Smith reaches 90, on Home Evening Monday evening Winfred and Olive Kimber, Lyman and Eula Kimber and Archie and Rhea Toyn, all of Grouse Creek, were at Family Home Evening at the Harold Smiths here in the Village. Marg and Clifford Anderson made their weekly trip to on Tuesday then went on to Ogden for shopping and visiting. LaRetta Smith accompanied them as far as Brigham City where she spent the day visiting with her sister, Julia Frost. Thursday evening Dale and Kathy Anderson and small son, Chris, of Roy, came to spend the week-enwith his parents, Clifford and Marg Anderson. Dale and Kathy were the first of the clan to arrive at the Village to celebrate the 90th birthday of Tre-mont- d mother and Mabel B. Smith. grandmother, Sunday, Oct. 5th, the family and friends enjoyed an open n at the home of Harold and LaRetta Smith. A program followed. It was the first time in many years that Moms children were all together. years old. She remembers living in Iowa but not as much as the traveling to Ogden by train. It seemed to move rather slowly and it took four or five days to get to Ogden. She remembers the plains of Kansas and the Prairie dogs with their mounds for miles around. She also distinctly remembers the man she saw who said he was Jesus. He dressed in burlap bags and had sandals on his feet. His hair and beard wer long and straggling and even at that time he went around preaching the end of the world. Her first home in Utah was at Kolmer, on the old line track of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Kolmer is only a name of the past now. Her father was a track-walkewalking the track three miles and back one direction in the morning of each day and the opposite direction in the afternoon, checking rails and r, repairs. That was 12 miles each day of walking and for 12y2 cents an hour. They made friends at Blue Creek and used to walk there to play and visit. Moved to Bovine Later they moved to Bovine station where her father became section foreman. Labor-or- s there were all Chinese and were very good to the children. The children learned some of the Chinese language and also how to eat their food with chopsticks. Her home was in several places along the old line railroad as her father was transferred from one place to another and in later years he homesteaded Owl Springs, in western Box Elder County near Lucin. Here Mom had the dubious pleasure of helping to clear the land of sage brush ready for planting. This was done with only a grubbing hoe and shovel. house-luncheo- Born in 1885 Mom Smith was born Oct. 2, 1885 to Clayton and Margaret Herrington, on a farm near Mallard, Iowa. She, with her two brothers, Marshall and Earl, and her parents came to Ogden when she was about six Dec. Mabel, Mom, married Henry L. Smith at Grouse Creek. He died in 1939. She is the mother of six living children. Harold, Margaret Anderson, Mabel McDade, Maxine Pruitt, all of Lucin Village; Ervin Smith of Contact, Nevada; Mildred Hickman of Willard; also two step daughters, Eunice Rector of Grass Valley, Calif, and Cora Hardt of Por-tolCalif. Mom has 13 24, 1906, a, grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. ' Not All Attended There were 39 people at the birthday party. Not all of the grandchildren or were able to attend. "Mom keeps reminding us all of how good God has been to her and how grateful she is for the opportunities and blessings she has had in living in America. She had sons, grandsons and fight to keep this country free and is proud of that fact as well as thankful that they all came home safe and Wednesday and Thursday. Mrs. Larry Howell spent Tuesday and Wednesday in Pocatello with her mother, Mrs. Ethel Kyle D. Adams . birthday. . Eagle award family attended Sacrament meeting at North Ogden Sun- earns Eagle Kyle D. Adams, 13, is one of the latest Brigham City Scouts to obtain his Eagle award. Kyle is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rex D. Adams of 881 Kentwood. A member of Troop 323, sponsored by the Brigham City 16th Ward, Kyle has served as senior patrol leader and scribe in his troop. In his ward, he has held the position of Deacons quorum president. His scoutmaster is Hal F. Reeder. Kyle is a student at Box Elder Junior High school where he maintains a 4.0 grade point average. He was elected mayor for both seventh and eighth grades at the school. G. Grandma and G. Granddaughter celebrated together. Birthdays are like bad habits they keep coming whether we want them or not. The only difference is that we can do something about the bad habits. Buddist bazaar, dinner slated for next month The Honeyville Buddhist church announces its annual fund raising dinner and bazaar will be held Nov. 15. Door prizes will be given away donations are 50 cents a ticket. Prizes are $200 for first, $100 for second and $75 for third. Many other prizes will be awarded and winners need not be present to win. Further information will be made available at a later date, a spokesman said. C. Hall Monday and Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Morris attended the wedding reception honoring Mr, and Mrs. Steven Olsen at the Racquet Club, Mount Erye at North Ogden Saturday evening. The bride is the daughter of John and Veda Edmond and niece of Mrs. Morris. returned Morris Christin with them for a weekend visit with her grandparents. Portage ward conference was held Sunday evening conducted by Bishop Douglas J. Gibbs. Members of the Malad Stake presidency and High Council were in attendance. Music was furnished by the ward choir, conducted by Elma J. Bell, accompanied by Lori Harris. Speakers were President Myron Sorenson, Clyde Hansen, Wayne Kent, Loyal G. Harris, John Roderick, Bishop Gibbs and youth representatives, Lori Harris and Larry Lynn John. Stake Board members of the various auxiliary organizations attended meetings of the ward during the week. Leona Chandler and daughter Kimberly brought members of Leonas Beehive class, Jody Warner, Tracy Tucker, Beth Alexander and Ann Wald, all of Salt Lake City and Marlene John of Laketown to the home of Leonas and Marlenes parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. Wynn John Friday where they enjoyed dinner and an afternoon of horse back riding and other activities. Attend UEA Mr. and Mrs. Josh Hawks attended UEA meetings at Salt Lake City from Thursday until Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Halford of Preston were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell C. Hall Monday. Mrs. Thelma D. Gibbs was the guest of her brother-in-laand sister, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Castleton of Salt Lake City Friday. Saturday she visited at the American Fork Training school with her son Richard Gibbs. Mrs. Goldie Wilson of South Greenfield, Mo., is visiting this week with her son and Mr. and Mrs. daughter-in-law- , Earl Henry and family. She was met at the Salt Lake City airport by the Henrys Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Murray Hoskins and son Brent of Clearfield spent the weekend here. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harris and baby daughter, Jennifer Ann of Sacramento, Calif., were met at the Salt Lake City airport Friday by Roberts parents, Mr. and Mrs. Devere Harris and grandson, David. They spent the weekend here and took their son David home with them after a weeks visit with his grandparents. They left Sunday evening. On Monday the Villagers were joined by the Winfred Kimbers, Lyman Kimbers and Rhea Toyn of Grouse Creek at the home of the Harold Smiths for a clean-uclean party, up the food that was left over from the birthday dinner on Sunday. An evening of music and song followed the dinner. We hope a good time was had by all. On Tuesday, week, Mabel and Don McDade and his mother, Fannie, were in Ogden to the doctor. They returned home on Friday. Charles and Maxine Pruitt were Ogden business callers on Wednesday, week. Terry, Joyce and daughter, Marcia, McDade came a week last Friday to spend the weekend with his parents, Don and Mabel McDade, and to celebrate Mabels birthday, which was the 28th. k The Villagers had a birthday dinner for her at the home of Marg and Clifford Anderson. Terry and Joyce returned to their home at Willard on Monday. Depot Mr. and Mrs. Jim Udy and family were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Udys parents, Mr. and Mrs. Farrell Williams of St. John. Their son Shawn returned with them after spending the weekend with his grandparents. Family Members The family members of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Allen met Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Allen of Roy and enjoyed a dinner party and an evening of visiting in honor of Newell and Hazel Allen Udy who will leave soon for Nashville, Tenn., where they will fulfill a mission for the LDS church. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Golden Allen of Centerville, Ralph Allen and Mrs. Edna Tippets of Ogden, Mr. and Mrs. John Allen of Riverside, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene (Faye) Bingham of West Point, Mr. and Mrs. J. Charles Allen and guests of honor of Salt Lake City, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Allen, Portage, the host and hostess. Mr. and Mrs. Cleon John of Salt Lake City spent the weekend at the John family home here. Mr. and Mrs. David Ezra Parkinson of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Elda Nelson and Mrs. Myrtle Thomas of Brigham City spent Saturday at the Parkinson family home here. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Hoskins were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bedwell of Springfield, Idaho, Monday and Tuesday. They were overnight guests of and daughter, their Mr. and Mrs. Bob Nichols and family and returned to their home Wednesday. Mrs. Carma Taylor and Mrs. Dorene Yerrington of Ogden visited with Mr. and Mrs. John F. Conley Monday. son-in-la- Underwent Surgery Mr. and Mrs. Joe Morris and Mrs. Thayne Hupp and children of Hansel Valley visited with Joes sister, Mrs. Roy (Leah) Merrill at the LDS hospital in Idaho Falls Wednesday. Mrs. Merrill underwent major surgery Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Reed Nielsen attended the cattle sale at Council, Idaho Tuesday. They returned home Wednesday. Friday guests of Mrs. Esther John were Bishop and Mrs. William D. Olswald and family tapped The Greyhound Bus depot on South Main was the victim of a till tap Monday. Officer Dell Braegger of the Brigham City police said Nancy Shinkle, an employee, told him she put $400 cash in the register land some time later noticed it was gone. Braegger said a possible suspect is a man who was waiting to go to Las Vegas and was sitting in the waiting room at the depot for about two hours before the money was discovered gone. Braegger said the man said he was going to purchase some donuts, and asked the employee what kind she liked. The suspect was last seen traveling south on Main street, he said. of Salt Lake City. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Knudsen attended the football game at North Ogden Saturday in the interest of their son Gordon who plays with the Bear River Valley 85 Little League team. Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. Wynn John were Mrs. Vernal P. Goodey and daughter, Annette. Mr. and Mrs. DeVon Price and Mrs. Louise Allen of Ogden visited with relatives and friends here Saturday. Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Thomas were their son and daughter-in-law- , Mr. and Mrs. Dale Thomas and family of Brigham City. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Morris attended a family party Monday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Callister and family of Washington Terrace in honor of the birthday anniversaries of grandchildren, Shawn Callister and Kaylyn Johnston. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hawks and family of Salt Lake City attended Sunday school here and were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Henry and family. Mrs. Hawks and Mrs. Henry are sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Hoskins of Layton spent the weekend here as guests of Mr. and Mrs. James E. John. Mrs. Glen Morris visited with her mother, Mrs. Pearl Hawks of Ogden Friday and Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Wendell C. Hall and Logan were Smithfield visitors Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Moralis (Hazel Knudsen) of Rosettia, Mexico are visiting with Mrs. Moralis mother, Mrs. Eliza Knudsen and other relatives. |
