Show THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, SUNDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER CITIZENS TELL REASONS FOR: - HOOVER VOTE Poll Draws Varied, Interesting Ex trfanations of SuDDOrt. After-Electio- n , By FREDERIC J. HASKJN. WASHINGTON, D. C, Nov. 11 At a time when Old party lines nave lost their clean cleavage there has become available for the tint time In American history an- - authentic statement of reasons, other than party reasons, why a president of the United State has been elevated to that position. The statement Is a clear indication of what the electorate expects of Herbert Hoover. The Republican national committee has taken a poll of persona whose names appear in "Who's Who In America." this poll differing from the many others which were taken prior to the 1928 canvass in that, in addition to asking an expression ef a preference as between the major can dictates. It asked for specific reasons In support of such preference. feasible U Place Replies . a Sixteen Classifications. - Thousands of replies were received embodying hundreds of thousands of words of reasons. They cover a wide range, but it has been possible to place them In sixteen classificaThe result Is the most illumition elecnating picture of the American camtoral mind ever revealed in a -- num. , Probably the most astonishing of this poll Is the finding that the reasons given are not political In the ordinary sense at all The idea of party is largely absent from the replies; The reasons given by the voters tor voting for Mr. Hoover for president are reasons which an employer jpould give for hiring a particular man to work for him. Character; that Is, personal Integrity, honesty, high weals, leads all re-s- uit other reasons. Beeond In Bank May Be Regarded As Largely; Political. The second In rank may be regarded as largely politicial in this Instance, but also a controlling factor In the employing of a servant It Is Ahrtetv TVi nmhlhlf tnr tani a such, doubtless contributed enormously to the result, although many of the communications received indicate a differentiation between the personal sobriety of the candidate and the Issue raised by the eightt eenth amendment. Third in rank stands the group of reasons arising from Mr. Hoover's world training, his International experience and familiarity with foreign peoples and governments. This result Is of special interest In view of the fact that many persons who favored Mr. Hoover feared that this International minded neas would militate against him, while others who opposed him counted upon his twenty years In other lands to defeat him. Campaign capital was made by his long absences from his native country and his suspected tendency to be too partial to other countries and peoples. This very foreign experience and understanding had precisely the opposite effect It was regarded as a recommendation. Hoover Considered Keen Execativa and Administrator, The fourth reason in rank was that Mr. Hoover Is a keen executive ai.4 administrator who has had, actual commercial experience In the world of business and might well be expected to conduct the federal establishment In accordance with sound business principles, as a nation become to a large extent one of shopkeepers, desires, The classification of reasons standing fifth Is negative. Objection to Tammany Influence in the White House is the basis of them. In most cases candidly and forcefully expressed, often with a touch of asperity. Sixth In order come Mr. Hoover's humanitarianism. His war work in Belgium, famine relief In Ruuaa. Mississippi flood relief, and other works were citey, and especially hts sympathy with the cause of child health. He was declared to be the children's president , The seventh group is one of especial interest Large numbers of vot-te- rs gave as a reason for supporting Mr. Hoover the fact that he had had ' . experience In serving the government of the United States. Reference was made in part to his war work as United States food administrator, but more particularly to bis service as secretary of commerce. The Idea of a career president was strongly aug gested. , Manv Interesting expressions ac companled the advancement of the reason which makes up the group eighth In rank; the reason that Mr.Hoover is an engineer, lyorrespuuuenta Dolnted out that no engineer bad been president of the United States since George Washington and that, as he had done well, the experiment might probitably be tried again. Attention was invited to the fact that many great engineering projects are forward in this country and that a qualified engineer would make an esat this pecially suitable candidate -t particular ume. Rellriotu Issue Retires Well Into the Background. "The religious Issue, so heatedly dis? cussed during the campaign, retires well Into the background in the list of reasons for voting for Mr. Hoover. It is ninth In rank out of a total of sixteen groups of reasons, positive, negative, and general The comma nlcations received showed numeruos interesting trends of thought on this matter, many voters referring to the Issue but declaring tnat iney the religion of the candidates at utterly immaterial. One ardent supporter of Mr. Hoover, who based his preference on the candidate's for office; after signing qualifications his name;-- " described himself as "a southerner. a Democrat, and ... a Dare Sea in ed priest" A certain weariness of politics In this normally politically minded nation was expressed in the reason given by voters falling into the classification tenth on the list It was the reason, usually emphatically stated, that Mr. Hoover Is not a poli tician.
