Show Emery County Progess, CasSe Dale tues&y October 25,1993 Lfta IB 2000 Hunting season options will be topic of upcoming RAC meetings How to distribute buck deer hunting permits for Utahs 2000 general seasons will be among items hunters may provide input on at upcoming public Regional Advisory Council meetings. The Division of Wildlife Resources is proposing that all general buck deer permits for 2000 be determine the number of permits that should be available in each help ensure that hunters who didn't draw a permit the first year did so the next. Input also will be sought about a Division proposal to reopen the Henry Mountains unit in southeast Utah, and the Vernon unit in Utah, to buck deer hunting Both units would be opened on a limited entry basis. Berth have been dosed to hunting for several years but Welch said buck numbers on the units have increased to a point that buck deer hunting can be offered on a limited basis. The Division also is proposing that the Pine Valley, Browse and Pine Valley, Commanche limited entry units in southwest Utah be closed to buck deer hunting. Both units have low buck to doe deer ratios, are tough units to hunt and have poor hunter success. The Division would like to close the units to hunting, build the buck numbers back up and then, with the help of the public, decide what type oftimited entry experience the units should be managed for. For example, the units could be managed for a buck to doe ratio of 1 5 bucks per 1 00 does, or the number cfhunters could be reduced and the units managed for 30 bucks per 100 does. It wouldn't hurt to shut them down, build some quality and then decide, through the public process, what to do with them, Welch said RespondiRgto public desires, the Division is proposing that the general season on two areas within the Southeastern Region be shortened The two areas - the LaSal west-centr- available through a statewide draw, said Mike Welch, Division big game coordinator. A number of other big game hunting items for Utahs 2000 seasons also will be discussed, as will wild turkey permit numbers for Utahs 2000 season. Whats discussed at the meetings will absolutely affect hunting opportunities in 2000," Welch said. Hunters need to be at the meetings." At the meetings the public will hear presentations about the proposals and may ask questions and provide their input and suggestions. RAC citizen representatives will take the public input received to the Utah Wildlife Board when it meets in Salt Lake City Nov. 17. Among items the board is expected to at the meeting is Utahs 2000 Big Game Proclamatioa ap-pro- ve DIVISION OF WILDLIFE RE- SOURCES PROPOSALS region. This proposal would most likely affect the Northern Region, which has relatively few public land hunt- ing areas for the number of hunters who want to hunt there. A total al of 27,100 resident permits and 2,900 nonresident permits are available for the Northern Region each year, but most ofthe regions deer hunting units are on private property. The federation believes its pro- posal would help prevent overcrowding on public deer hunting land in the Northern Region, and would help improve the number of bucks on the regions Cache and Box Elder public land units by decreasing hunting pressure, Welch said PROGRESS A proposal by the Utah Bowmans Association and Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife would result in2,000 limited entry any bull archery elk permits. The permits would allow archers to take branch antlered bulls on selected spike only general season units, selected limited entry units, and on all any bull general season units. Meeting date, time and location for the Southeastern Region will Nov. 2; 6:30 p.m.; John Wesley Powell Museum; 885 E. Main St. Green River. The proposals were made available for review on the Divisions Internet web site on Oct 20.
