(AP) Rod Roderick, a race fan from Pembroke, Maine, lost his shot at a $1 million prize Saturday when he hit two cones, then spun out during a speed contest with 1988 Winston Cup champion Bill Elliott. Roderick was drawn at random from more than 250,000 entries in the Reese's-Bil- l Elliott $1 Million Driving timed Challenge. The one-la- p event was run Saturday on a special course set up on Atlanta front Motor Speedway's straightaway. Driving special Cup cars, the two drivers made separate one-la- p runs on the course, laid out with orange cones. Elliott went first, and was clocked in 53:01 seconds. Roderick, who said he never has driven a race car of any kind, got a good start. But he but clipped two cones before the spin that ended his hopes of winning the big prize. (AP) Terry Labonte, taking advantage of a break by making his last pit stop under a yellow Hag after Mark Martin stopped under green Saturday, won Busch Light 3(K) Grand National race. Labonte, a Winston Cup regular e driver in the Busch and Series, beat former Grand National champion David Green to the finish line by 2.2 seconds in a battle of Chevrolets at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. finish But Green's second-plac- e back at the about 10 1.522-mil- e track was good to give him the series points enough over Martin. lead by 612-54- 9 Martin, who led four times for 119 laps of the 197 laps, appeared on the way to an easy victory until p situahe was caught in the tion. He stopped on lap 159, and part-tim- pit-sto- the caution flew on lap 160 when Tim Bender hit the wall. Martin wound up seventh. "I know what it's like having the fastest car and not winning," said Labonte, who led only the last 26 laps after passing Green. "We didn't have the fastest car today, but it was good enough and we played the pit stops just right. "We were going to pit the next lap and I saw two guys behind me spin out. So, I thought, 'Well, good for me.' We stayed out another lap, and came in and pitted under caution. It was a gamble to stay out, but it paid off." Phil Parsons was third, followed by Steve Grissom and Stanton Barrett. It was the eighth Busch Series victory for Labonte, whose last win in the series came last August on the road course at Watkins Glen, N.Y. rw fcriEEXICAN LADDER ft SCAFFOLDING, "When I saw Rod coming through the last turn as fast as he was going, I knew he'd either end up a millionaire or we'd be seeing some action real soon," said Elliott, who in 1985 became the only driver to win the Winston Million, a $1 million bonus for winning at least three of NASCAR's Big Four events in the same season. "I overcompensated," Roderick said. "Man, that was quick. Now I can appreciate the skill it takes to do this at 200 miles an hour. "I knew I was taking some chances, but with a million dollars on the line, I wasn't going to back off a bit." His consolation prize was a 1996 Bill Elliott signature Edition Ford Thunderbird. Reese's also donated $10,000 to the Children's Miracle Network, a national program benefiting hospitals for children in the U.S. and Canada. Roderick, who never had attended a Winston Cup race but says he has more than 5,000 collectible racing cards, also was invited to watch Sunday's Purolator 500 from a hospitality suite. Because Roderick didn't collect the $1 million, the candy maker said it will repeat the promotion next year. WIND TUNNEL BOUND: NASCAR is expanding the twice-a-yewind tunnel tests it initiated in 1995 to include Busch Series cars. The Ford Thunderbird of Mark Martin, the Chevrolet Monte Carlo of Bobby Labonte and the Pontiac Grand Prix of Ward Burton were impounded Saturday following the Busch Light 300 Grand National race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Three more cars again one of each make represented in the race will be impounded Sunday after the Purolator 500 Winston Cup event on the oval. same 1.522-mil- e "This will allow us to do some comparison tests," said NASCAR spokesman Kevin Triplett. ar 378-491- day-to-d- 1.
