Ust 14.95 'Free at Last' to open on Friday ' The latest stage production at Brigham Young University will deal with how tl 1978 revelation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about blacks and the priesthood affects five young men. The new play Will premiere on Friday.- March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in trie Margetts Theatre of the Harris Fine Arts Center. Preview performances March 13 and 14 will be half price and a matinee will be .offered March 23 at 2 p.m. Tickets at $6 for students and faculty. $7 for alumni and senior citizens and $8 for the public are available .through the Fine Arts ticket office The pro'fit by calling duction will run through March 30. "He believes and likes what he is taught about the LDS Church, but he has questions about why blacks can't participate in the priesthood." The play is set at the University of Tennessee in Memphis where Ben and his friend, Cal, attend school. Cal is baptized early in the play, against the wishes of Les, a mutual friend who teaches black history at the university. "The beliefs Les holds are sometimes still heard today,' Metten said. "Cal and Ben must deal with the truth that they cannot hold the priesthood yet with the truth they feel in the message taught by the missionaries. "This is a very human piece that deals with tough questions," Metten said. "It is hard to face issues we really don't have answers for, but it is important that we have a The best-sellin- g been updated. forum to deal with crucial ideas that affect us today." The cast will conduct a discussion following each performance to share issues raised in the play. The audience is encouraged to stay and participate. "We thought of only doing a few performances with a discussion," Metten sais, "but the cast felt that every performance needed that type of interaction." The play will feature Abdullah (Abe) Mills as Ben, Hubert K. Wiggins III as Cal and Jason Ball as Les. James C. Bybee and Daniel Brierton Sharp are the missionaries, with young Ben played by Clayton Godby and Kelly Perkins portraying Ben's mother. Costume designer is Erica Hor-malight designer is Russ Ridge-wa- y and Blake Rothstein designed the set.
