What's the secret to get northern white rhinos to mate or the best living space for sexually active cheetahs? These questions come from the inquiring minds of about 30 researchers who use the techniques of a crime lab and the tools of a sperm bank at a sex clinic for endangered species. From analyzing DNA to sawing off rhino horns, researchers at the San Diego Zoo's Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species are trying to save animals on the brink of extinction and collect genetic fragments of those that might not be around in 50 years a modern Noah's ark for the 21st century. "We really do believe in a whole animal approach," said Barbara Durrant, chief of the reproductive physiology division. One of the first of its kind in the world when it opened 20 years ago, the center now operates on a $2 million annual budget in a building behind the zoo's duck exhibit. to In two separate buildings fire in case of loss a total prevent six freezers or other disaster hold viable samples of semen, eggs and tissue cells at 425 degrees below zero. Future scientists will contend with the frozen samples, but current researchers are using their knowledge to save animals on the brink of extinction today. Because animals are heading toward extinction at the rate of about one a day, center researchers cannot rely on tomorrow's technology. They try to use what is dik-dik- ld known about the animals' behavior, physiology, hormones and diseases to develop a plan that works now. Their most earthshaking success came late last year when a pair of amorous northern white rhinos finally mated something never accomplished by the captive rhinos whose numbers nave dropped to about 40 worldwide. An event six years in the making, the mating involved research from nearly all the center's six divisions, Durrant said. By droppings, analyzing CzekaTa-Grubendocrinologist Nancy a found female rhino named Nola had normal levels of hormones. But she was acting too aggressively toward males, so physiologists decided to saw off her horns. "We felt that if we took the horns off the females, we could decrease the aggressive reactions of the females toward the males," Durrant said. "With one male it didn't work, but we introduced another male." Three months later, Czekala-Grubis still trying to figure out whether Nola is pregnant. "If you wanted to monitor the reproduction of a dog or a human, for instance, you'd go to the doctor and they'd take a blood sample and they'd measure hormones to tell you whether you're pregnant or said. infertile," Czekala-Grub"With exotic animals, you can't do that, so we have to take samples that are left behind," she said. Hormone analysis through fecal and urine specimens has also helped center scientists work with giant pandas, rare apes and other species. Some of the research has also helped humans. For example, women can now have their urine rather than their blood tested to er 9 VP Bouncing Bunnies, Spring Florals, Lace and More 67 Hours Pleasant Grove Monday-Saturda- y WOVEN PLAIDS THERMAL KNITS 2& A tcllinj" statistic: We talk a lot about jobs w ith a future, but here's a job that doesn't have one: H.ink teller. Sometimes animals become pregnant and produce infertile offspring. Other times, researchers are unsure which animal is the father. It believed to be caused by the poor quality of cheetah sperm. "But logically it doesn't make a lot of sense," said Don Lindburg, chief behavioralist. "I now have data that says it is not a problem with the animal, it's a problem with the people who manage the animal." Lindburg found that cheetahs are solitary creatures who rely on scent to find their mates, a process that works in the wild but fails when the animals are kept together in cages. "We found that if we did not put them with the female until they were sexually aroused, they responded to her with courtship as opposed to aggression," he said. There's an army of us every day who stand in the aisles rubbing the plastic bags together as though we're try ing to make fire from twigs. If there is no man in sight, we do what we have to do spit. Want to provide comic relief for aisle seven? Try to get two soft drinks out of the plastic carrier. The strength thing is a rumor started by men and is left over from the day s .when women were content to feel a man's muscle and .tiier. By Erma Bombeck There are a lot of good things about being married Not worn mg about a date comes to mind. Give me a little time and I'll think of some more things, but the big reason for sharing a life with a man is that lie can open jars with lids that have been put on by the same wrenches used to tighten the lug bolts on your tires. Men can get to bacon that has been hermetically sealed for a future in the Smithsonian Institution. I know what you're thinking. You're saying to yourself. "This is a sexist thing, and she is suggesting that men are stronger than women." Wrong. I am suggesting that a woman, given a package of lunch meat with a handy zip lock for future use, will rip at it with her teeth, stab it to death with a bread knife, beat it senseless w ith a fork and bludgeon it on the counter edge. She will he on the verge of insanity when her husband says. "Give me that." He Hips his fingernail under it. and it opens in seconds. That is because the woman has loosened it up. You could breathe on it at this point and the plastic would give way. In some marriages, it is the only thing a man does to make him feel good about himself. He may not buy the food, make a decision on what to cook or how to prepare it. 244 "Investing in Lifetime Customers" 0 191 South University Ave. 373-406- ' |
