During one of the most important events of his life, Lee Newman wanted radio personality Howard Stern there. Vvhen that didn't work, Newman abruptly pleaded guilty to the murder of his girlfriend whom he had already confessed to killing before Sterns' nationwide audience. Newman entered the surprise plea last week in Santa Clara County Superior Court during a routine hearing after Newman twice tried to fire his lawyer for refusing to subpoena Stern. Why Newman wanted Stern to testify is unclear since he hardly would have helped Newman's defense or added anything. Newman declined to be interviewed, and his attorney, Alfredo Morales did not return telephone calls. But the family of the murdered woman, Debra Lyn F.berle, 32, suspect Newman wanted the media attention a Stern court appearance would bring. "I'm overwhelmed bv all of this." said her mother, Alice Eber-l- e. Neither Eberle nor other family members would discuss the case further. Several family members, however, seemed outraged over New man's never means them. Newman abandoned his attempt to fire his lawy er after the prosecutor told him he would probably be unsuccessful in making Stern appear. So in an abrupt turnaround, Newman became tearful and pleaded guilty to Eberle's murder. "Lee Newman is a manipulative sociopath," said Deputy District Attorney Lane Liroff. "He mouths expressions of remorse but confessed to severing Eberle's head during a drug stupor. Newman already had been charged w ith the crime. "One night, I had taken some acid and smoked some crack, flipped out, and I cut my fiancee's head off," Newman told Stern during the February 1985 call broadcast on San Jose's KOME-FAmong the listeners driving to work were prosecutors in the District Attorney's Office. Liroff said he also had subpoenaed Stem, but never planned to hav e him testify. He wanted Stern on call if it became necessary to authenticate the tape of the broadcast Cen- ter. Samuel S.
