In the tradition of bringing diverse musical talents to the tabernacle, the Provo Arts Council will be sponsoring "Just A Portion" on Monday, March 11 in the Provo Tabernacle. This evenings' concert is part of the 1996 Winter Community Music Series and is free to the public. It is a wonderful opportunity for families and special interest groups to enjoy the cultural arts in Provo at no cost. Programs begin at 7 p.m. with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. "Just a Portion" is a singing gospel group of men and women from Salt Lake City who are dedicated to singing for the Lord. The selections range from patriotic to contemporary renditions and their extraordinary sound makes the words come alive. Most of the members of the group belong to Salt Lake's Calvary Baptist Church and sing in the 50 member Mass Choir, or are affiliated with a Christian church. The choir received many requests to sing, but the logistics involved in organizing 50 people for each performance were too great. The Pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, who did not like to say no, decided to send just a portion of the choir for a recording to sing back-u- p artist who was at Abravenal Hall. Pastor Davis did not select 'Wt 11 M7T 3 II those to sing, but called upon his Associate Minister of Music, Brian Hesleph. to form the group. In looking for members of the group, Brian looked for people who were active in the church, who could sing in a particular section and who would be committed. The persons he chose come from all walks of life but have one thing in common; they believe in the the Lord Jesus Christ and that He is the head of their life. The name "Just A Portion" represents a portion of God's love, a portion of God's grace and a portion of God's children. The main focus of the group is to spread gospel music throughout the state of Utah. The phrase "gospel music" simply means the bringing and singing of good news. Some of their credits include Black Association. Catholics Kingsbury Hall, University of Utah; SLCC Voices West; Living Traditions; Utah Democratic Party; Women's Town Club; KUTV; KSL; as well as being featured on national television's NBC Today Show. The Community Music Series will continue on March 25 with the UVSC Orchestra, on April 8 with the 40 Fingers Piano Quartet, on April 22 with "An Evening with Doc."
